Ugly fabrics

Post by kho » Fri Nov 23, 2007 3:39 am

I purchased some "build your stash" fatquarter fabrics from(shamefaced) another website. Two, maybe three were ok, but the rest are just plain ugly. What do you do with the really ugly, why did I buy this fabricss? Or are they destined to lay there and make you shudder? Of course if I got rid of them I know I would find a use or someone who would want them.

Yesterday, I used a butt-ugly fat quarter to make myself a Dammit Doll. This is a little stuffed doll, made as ugly as humanly possible, that you whack around to relieve frustration. I will be making some for our Girl Scout leaders as holiday gifts--!

If I happen to get an ugly fat qu. I just toss it in the scrap box and sooner or later it will go into a scrap quilt or a string quilt. You don't notice one ugly piece of fabric amist all those scraps or strings.

A good use for the "uglies" is base for making a crazy quilt piece--like crazy quilted stockings, potholders, even a lap-size crazy quilt. Or it could be the lining of something--something that needs a little extra strength but isn't going to be seen. When I make walker bags, I usually put an extra pocket inside the bag--isn't seen, but is very useful, uglies would be great for that.
I could go on with uses, but I think you get my ideas............carol/kittyquilt

Could you use them as a thin border around something? Or maybe a binding for something small?

If not I suggest you ask Carol for the Dammit doll pattern, it sounds cute to me....

I still do not believe as I said a few months ago there is any such thing as ugly fabric. Used in the right quilt, in the right place, etc it will be beautiful. Put them away, and when they are needed, there they will be. Remember the story of the Ugly Duckling?

I don't know why But I think some of the ugliest fabric I have ever seen make some of the prettiest quilts. If all else fails get a pattern you like and take the ugly and make a quilt just for the heck of it. Bet it comes out pretty. See the barn yard fabric? I won it as a ugly.

Our guild had an ugly fabric challenge.........The end result was if you cut it up into really small pieces to use here and there you can't tell its ugly fabric! lol but its true.

I hosted the Unwanted Treasures swap a while ago and we did have some of those "why did I buy this!" pieces but not too many. Several of the participants sent extras of their not so wonderful fabric and my rainbow girls & I have been using them with plain colors to make the lap quilts for a local rest home. Most are okay pieces just not my style and the residents who rec'd the quilts have loved them. Maybe the best use for fabrics that we look back on and wonder if we lost our minds is for something list that, the comfort blocks or pot holders although I like the doll idea. LOL Hope you find a good use for them.
Happy stitching!!

I save my ugly fabric. When I need orange to build a snowman nose I fussy cut from the ugly stash, etc. My uglies have many holes.
