Double Nine Patch Pattern

Hi ladies,
I am planning to do a double nine patch quilt. Always loved the pattern, so I ordered a fabric collection, and a solid color.
My question is, are all double nine patch blocks alternated with a solid fabric of the same size, or are can you just place them side by side, or possible alternate blocks that are 5 - 9 patches/ 4 - solid patches, alternated with one 5 solid - 4 - 9 patch? Does that make sense?
