Nana's Garden Quilt

Post by Dee123 »

HI, I just watched the DVD on making Nana's Garden Quilt. I have a few questions. Should I purchase a 6x12 inch ruler and a 6x24 inch ruler for cutting the strips? Can you buy the strips already cut to make this quilt? Does anyone know what the tool was that Eleanor used in the DVD video? I think she called it a ruler cuter combination tool, but I'm not sure where to buy it. Dee

Hi Dee. I don't know what tools you may already have, but if your cutting mat is large enough for the 24" ruler, it comes in handy for other projects as well. If you can find it, there is one that has a little "lip" on the end that butts up against you mat to keep it stright.
The ruler/combination tools are a bit pricy and I have not met anyone who owns one, if you do, you may want to look at it work before making that investment.
And, yes you can purchase the strips already cut. Check EB site and a lot of the others carry them also.
Good Luck, Pam.

Dee - do I have a story for you!!! LOL I bought Bali Pops which are 2-1/2" pre-cut strips and they were just beautiful in the package. When I got them home and opened them almost every one of them was crooked. Some were not even 44" long. I've heard the same thing about jelly rolls. So I will cut my own 2-1/2" strips from now on. Just giving you a heads up. I really don't like bashing a product but I don't think there is any excuse for selling people crooked strips.

I have been cutting some kits for a class I'm teaching, and I forgot about my Shape Cutter until I was almost through. It took about 5 min. to cut that one, instead of 30 the others took. It's a great tool to have, if you cut a lot of strips.

Oh, that's terrible about the Bali pops! I'm glad I saw this because I've been thinking of getting them.

I've never had a crooked strip from Moda jelly rolls, and I haven't tried other manufacturers' jelly rolls.

I had only a 6" X 24" ruler for my first few quilts and it worked fine, but it's nice to have a smaller one, too. The big one is a little cumbersome for some tasks. Once I realized that I had gone insane about quilting and was pretty likely to stay that way, I bought lots of specialty rulers and I love having all of them.

QIAD helps with that. :) I especially like the set of fussy cut rulers and the flying geese rulers.
