Help with Layer Cake and or 5 inch squares

Post by LancasterFan4 »

Do any of you ladies have ways I can use a layer cake of fabric?
I purcased one at a quilt show recently along with some precut 5 inch squares and my brain won't tell me how to use these. Thanks ahead of time for you help, you folks always have such great answers.

I love those 5 inch squares, I made several tote bags using them. They worked great for that. Also made a set of placemats. Marge

Have you looked in the "quilt photo" section here?

Eleanor's Dessert Time pattern can use Layer Cakes. Also a Jelly Roll for the 'piano key' border. Here's a photo of one I made from a Layer Cake and a Jelly Roll that I bought from QIAD at the show in Knoxville in July. Haven't quilted it yet.

And the 5" squares are perfect to use for Eleanor's Tossed Nine Patch pattern. You just need 1/3 yard of another fabric for the center patch of each 9 patch. I used the purple, then used it again for the narrow border. Was able to find one of the fabrics from the charm squares for the border.

P.S. I goofed on cutting the strips for the side borders - so that's why there's a nine patch in two corners! Just a way of fixing a goof!

Ann, both are beautiful... I have made the tossed 9patch and it is a sinch... and is even easier with the cake squares already cut out... I have the dessert time pattern just haven't used it yet.

Nice quilts, Ann! I really like Dessert Time...I might have to get that pattern. I just bought my first layer cake from QIAD using the gift certificate they handed out. :)

I like scrappy quilts, and buy the majority of my fabric on sale. When I buy it I cut it into 5" squares, and 2.5" strips.

I have two books I love: Nickle Quilts, and More Nickle Quilts, by Pat Speth.

I also am just finishing a Jewel Box quilt by Eleonar that calls for 5.5" squares, but I used my 5" for the squares.

Have fun!
