Is inkjet printer ink permanent?? Quilt labels...
I am tired of the way my handwriting looks on my quilt labels! I can piece and quilt a great quilt but it just ruins it when I make a label so I am curious about inkjet printers. I made a label on my regular printer and all the ink bleed bigtime as soon as I squirted and pressed to.......DAMN! So, since my Dad gave me a gift card for Christmas, I was thinking......

I use the specially treated fabric that I think is called "Printed Treasures" or something like that here at QIAD. I print my labels out on my inkjet and haven't heard of any problems. I usually steam press mine and haven't noticed smearing.

I think it's all in the fabric. One of our LQS sells the Printed Treasures fabric. I've used InkJetPrinting by Jacquard http://www.jacquardproducts.com/product ... cotton.php on two labels.
After 24 hours I rinsed it and then pressed it on paper towels. There was a bit of transfer, but it did not run. Once I had it on the quilt, I washed the quilt and there was no running. Admittedly, I only used black ink.
On my nieces quilt, I used a clear T-shirt transfer.

If you look for it, you can seen the shine to the bottom left of the bird. I've used t-shirt transfers and the hold up pretty well. On my t-shirts they survive a couple of years where I'm washing the shirt every couple of weeks. A quilt typically doesn't get washed that frequently, so it should hold up well.

You can make your own 'printer fabric' by soaking muslin with Bubblejet, allow to air dry (do not put in dryer)then iron on freezer paper and cut to 8.5" X 11" (or whatever size your printer takes). These do not run if you let them sit for an hour, peal off paper and rinse, then iron with paper towels (or just let sit for 3 weeks, I've never had the patience!) If you're nervous, you can rinse with Synthropol (spell?), the same rinse you should use when dyeing your own fabrics.
Here's one site where you can get Bubblejet:

I just bought the "Printed Treasures" fabric the other day for labels. I can't wait to try it out now. Thanks for a great question and answers. Lori
