Label

Post by armymomscorpion »

I'm pretty new to the quilting addiction I have somehow developed! LOL

I want to attach a fabric label to a quilt my mom and I are making for my grandmother. I've placed small labels on quilts for my grandbabies. But I want to make sure I'm doing this right. I need a variety of technic suggestions from you all!

Right is easy. Does it stay on the quilt!

Seriously just as everything else in quiting there is more than one way to attach a label to a quilt.

I've been known to just sign the quilt with a Pigma Pen and call it good just to make sure there's a label.

I've used my sewing machine to 'write' on the binding before I attached it to the quilt. I've also used it to write directly on the quilt.

I've caught the edge of the label in the binding and then hand sewed the other two edges.

I've hand sewn the entire label.

Here are a couple samples of my labels:

Bottom line, whatever works for you.http://www.flickr.com/photos/knitnoid/s ... 492707782/

I too have used a variety of labels. I have used a pigma pen, hand embroidered, machine embroidered a label. The long arm quilter embroiders directly onto the backing before quilting.

A thought given to me is you want to make the label so it cannot be removed easily so quilt over it. The reason is quite simple: to avoid a theft.

Hope all these thoughts help.

I usually machine embroider my label and hand sew it on to the back of the quilt. I've also seen where you can buy the fabric for your printer and make a label on your computer and print it out on the fabric. I would like to try that as I think it would be a lot quicker than the embroidery. I've also used a method like knitnoid and had my machine "write" one line on the quilt backing near the binding. You can also buy preprinted fabric labels (I've seen some really cute ones) and write on them with a permanent fabric pen.

knitnoid, is your middle name really "Craft"? It suits you well. :)

Awesome! Thanks everyone. I actually have some of the fabric for the printer and have used that twice. I have to check to see if it is a cream color as I don't remember. If so, it will blend in well. I can't wait to get the top done and post the photos! It is gorgeous. My mom's first quilt. She did a fantastic job and I'm so proud of her!

I'm going to try something I heard about; baste the label to the backing before you quilt it and then it becomes a permanent part without having to hand sew.
