MONDAY, June 16th, 2025
Good early morning,
I was awakened at 10:30pm with throat pain when swallowing - another fun side effect of my new BP medication. After being up nearly 2 hours and drinking a cuppa herbal mint tea, my BP and respirations are great and my airway is not compromised, but it's still not fun. I've sent a message via My Chart to my doctor. We're supposed to leave this morning for 5 days in Eastern WA.
Yesterday went an unexpected, though fun route - Lara and I went grocery shopping after visiting Alec at his bakery. Turns out their other son Drew, was coming for BBQ which I hadn't known so I spent the next several hours in the kitchen making potato salad, apple and chocolate pies, and shucking corn. We had a campfire outside and set up table and grill on our fireside patio. It was a nice gathering, both grandsons were here with their parents, but both boys had to get up at 4am for work so the party broke up early. I never got to my house cleaning, or trailer packing. The best of excuses not to get things done! A purrfect Father's Day!
LORI - great tip to use parchment paper when fusing with an iron. My plan is to zip to Kohl's when they open tomorrow morning for a new iron. Hopefully I won't mess the new one up! That oven of your friends was odd - working only every other day. I wonder what an electrical engineer would make of that. Fun to help decorate for a party. What kind of party?
MARY Q - So how old is your dishwasher? Guess you have another date with that repairman. The insurance we are dealing with isn't AAA per se - they only are the middleman for the insurance company of the guy who hit us. I don't get it myself. However, as the old saying goes, if you lie down with fleas . . . . or something like that. Meaning I'd never deal with either of these companies after our experience. But it will be good to get our truck fixed finally.
DIANE - how nice to have dinner brought to you! And cards afterward. What was for dinner? What cards do you play? And did you win? We love cards and board games. How is Joe feeling?
JANA - a potato museum. Sounds uniquely interesting. I have a rock my dad plowed up in his corn field. It looks exactly like a potato, color, eyes, and all. Maybe it should go to their museum. Your idea of alternating irons weekly might be another question to run by an electrical engineer. Anybody know one?
VAL - I hope you get to go to that quilt show. Maybe Chriss will, too, and you can meet up . . . . sounds like you enjoyed the fair enough to spend the entire day. Once you pay to get in, you may as well experience the whole enchilada! I actually prefer the smaller fairs to the big state fair. Not so crowded!
JUDI - did your Sunday go as planned? We had a quiet day planned but it turned into a lot of busy! Happy busy, but I was still tired by 4pm!
Well, it's 1am now. I think I'll finish my tea and go back to bed. We'll see what the morning brings. I don't feel any better, but I don't feel any worse, either, so I may as well get some sleep. If all goes according to our plan, we will be gone for 5 days, returning Saturday. Bill says he's taking the computers, but we won't have internet until later in the week. The first two nights we plan to be camped in the Yakima Canyon, where we were when 911 happened. At that time there was no cell coverage so we didn't know about it for several hours.
Have a marvy Monday!

Good morning Mary it sounds like a fun day yesterday so glad you are able to be with family.
We had breakfast with DD and family then we came home Ken talked to 2 sons who couldnt make it over but wished him a happy fathers day. Third son and grandduaghter and little Navy came by for a visit. and brought lottery tickets and beer,,Ken thought that was fun, I made meatloaf and baked taters for supper and after clean up I vegged out. Didnt do anything but watch a couple of youtube videos...
Today after I get a few chores done I might bake some cookies...we are out of snacks If I bake some and freeze them they seem to last longer...I dont have any chocolate chips but have chocolate chunks...so I gues it will be chocolate chunk cookies...or Snickerdoodles...i decide when I go down to the kitchen,,
This afternoon I will take Val to therapy. They are trying to loosen up the stiffness in her legs...it will be a slow process but we hope for the best for her,,,
Mary I was on lisinopril and had a cough that was minor but very irritating and It at times gave me a sore throat,,,I mentioned it to my cardiologist and he immediately changed it to another BP drug that works fine with no irritating side effects,,, Well Im off to see what i can do Hope your day goes well,,,XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Good morning to all. Today will be sunny but humid - oh well, common in the south.
Yesterday was great with Joe and Fran as usual. We had meatballs and sausage made in red gravy with ziti. My friend from next door was walking her dog and we invited her in for dinner. She just moved in about 6 months ago from Colo. and she loves the winter weather here. Now, lets see what she thinks of summer here. So after dessert (Fran made chocolate covered strawberries and chocolate covered fresh pitted dates with peanut butter stuffing. They were yummy. So cards were not played but I think I would have won anyway.
My dearest cousin Lynn, 74, is having a kidney removed tomorrow morning as it has a mass that is almost filling the kidney completely. She went to the ER for bleeding and after the tests were done they scheduled surgery. She has to be at the hospital at 5 a.m.
Please keep her in your prayers.
Diane

Good morning from Gretna, NE. I looked out at my Aunt's yard and there was a beautiful Cardinal just waiting to say good morning.
Looks to be a nice day to travel.
MaryZ, Garry is on Losartan for PB, no side effects. I hope it doesn't mess up your trip. I hope you got some sleep.
Diane, Sending prayers for your cousin.
Judi, It sounds like Ken had a good father's day.
Yesterday was an easy travel day, only a 4 hour drive. Today will be the same, so we'll visit with my Aunt til about noon, then leave. If travel goes as planned, we'll cross the border Wednesday.
Good day to all.
Lyn

Good morning!
Seems I know a electrical engineer, he liveshere! When he was in the navy, he also worked with a steam power plant on board his ship. A iron is a form of a steam plant. So off he went on teaching me. I shall now share. Yes, he says using two different irons, rotating them would be a good idea. Now for the internal workings. There's a heating element, a nychron wire, that cycles on and off, that creates the heat,, that sometimes.is the culprit. It can get brittle by the constant heat up, discharge of heat, coool down. We cause that by pushing the steam button. The blast of colder water on the steam generating plate, shocks it, so poof steam, and that shock lowers the temp and then the nychron wire surges to bring it back to temp, over and over again. Mr G can't quantify things, not able to test, but says rotating two irons would be a good idea. He always taught me and worked his machinery at less than their rated capacity. His favorite line on machine working capacity, was 80 percent. If you ran a machine at its top capacity, your chances of failure are greater, so he says. Mr G says, read manuals. He always does! Now to water in the Iron. Minerals are the downfall, but some are needed. So he has me use a 50/50 mix of distilled water and a bottled spring water. I have three Oliso irons in various usage here. One is for quilting, the heaviest use, next one for shirts and dresses and a third back up. They do get somewhat of a rotation, more because of living on two different floors and not wanting to drag things up or down. So if you find a brand you like, that lasts awhile, two will stretch out life, simply by only using each half time, but could add life on the culprit wire, by lessening the number of content cycles of on off. And oh, don't drop the irons on the floor that have fancy electronics in them. The electronics are delicate. I lost several irons over the years with my cats knocking them off the ironing board, which the cat thought was his personal perch! So that's a very brief synopsis of today's talk at my house. Oh, Mr G says also not to push our sewing machines at full speed all the time either. It will wear out parts in the mechanical side of them. So slow down a bit. When I use my LA, I can overspeed and he hears the needle pounding and tells me to back off a bit. Even when I load the washer, he's taught me half the capacity, it cleans better and doesn't put so much weight, wet clothes, on the motor to spin. He loves answering questions, so ask, I'll try to help.
My day is a load of laundry, straighten kitchen and mop the floor there. I let the grands have ice cream treats covered in chocolate and now have dropped bits of chocolate shell every where! Rule here is bar or kitchen table, do they listen? Uggh! Then sew. Andrew will be on the plane to Dallas on June 23rd from the MTC here in Provo. Today is letter day!
Off to get food, and it will be another hot, but wonderful day here!
Hugs,
Jana.
Me edit - I read him this post and he wants to add about house wiring. Most of the electrical plugs in our homes are 15 amps. That's what lights run on. Our irons will draw 1500 watts, maybe more, and could cause problems. A iron that cycles on and off, in your sewing room, that dims the overhead light, is a sign of the smaller house circuit. So don't plug in both irons at once. Or a iron and light and sewing machine. A overload on a circuit can pop the breaker or worst heat the wire in the wall and cause a fire. Especially with super insulation. House wires, as well as all electrical wires create heat as the voltage runs through them. It needs to be able to disapate that heat to be safe. My irons all run on a 20 Amp circuit. Usually that's what is in kitchens. Bedroom circuits are usually the 15 Amp ones, so be careful. Mr G's dad was a physict and tested on wire heat in super insulation before he built his Geodesic dome home here in Utah. My FIL wrote several papers for publication on how much air space was needed to allow the wire heat to dispute and not cause a fire. Safety is a great concern in this family!

Re: MONDAY, June 16th, 2025
Good Morning
Oh Yeah It's a nice sunny bright day here!! Windows open (until it gets stinkin' hot later) It's just so good to see the sun after the few cloudy days we had!!
Maryz... Oh I so hope the Dr gets back to you right away! I sometimes wonder why they prescribe Lisinopril when that coughing/tickle reaction is so common. Atenelol does the same thing. How fun to be able to have breakfast etc with the WHOLE L & L family. Do you suppose L & L will head towards Austin when they hit the road. How fun would that be to have your girls together, and for Amara to see her Auntie Lara! Dishwasher is only 3 years old--an LG which I always thought was a good brand. They are all computer run now and I have a sneaky feeling that it's a computer issue. Luckily the technician is able to come out between 11 & 1 today! Hope you get to leave town on time!
Judi.... If it weren't so hot here today, I'd maybe join you in baking some cookies! I just might anyway--I can always turn on the AC. I have a recipe for cranberry/oatmeal cookies on the package of craisins that I'm anxious to try. Maybe I'd make a double batch and set them aside for Evie's grad party this weekend---as lord knows, I shouldn't have cookies in the house----but man every once in a while I sure get a craving!!
Diane... My BFF moved from Colorado to Missouri----from dry to wet! I'm thinking it might be an adjustment for your new neighbor too! I remember being in FL one year at Disney World---we set out suitcases out on an outdoor patio and by the time we went to pack up to go home, they were full of mold!! We had to go buy new suitcases!!! Will send prayers for your cousin that all goes well for her surgery--and the any lab results come out clear!!
Lyn... Same med for me here! Seems to work just fine!
I'm still upright and breathing. Hope you have smooth roads this week. Wave when you go by!
Jana..... What a wonderful explanation of irons!! I never thought of how an iron really works but it sure was interesting. I use tap water in my irons. I do have hard water generally but have a water softener. Usually I just run the un-softened water through my Brita filter. For some reason the cold water in my kitchen isn't softened, tho the hot is. Both of my irons seem to run hotter if there is water in them, tho some folks say to not use water at all! Gotta have my burst of steam!! Thanks for the great info. I figure if I can get a $50 iron to last 2 years, that's only $2.00 a month ( from an accountant standpoint!
)
Lori.., I agree, that d/w is possessed. In fact that's kind of how I explained it when I called the appliance service company.
Chriss... What's Dad's project today?
I did manage to finish 2 quilt tops I was working on yesterday----after I washed a full d/w load of dirty dishes by hand! Not sure which project I'll tackle today. Found out my niece that is having a baby in December---It's a BOY! So now I'll have to keep my eyes open for baby boy quilts. I have some darling sailboat fabric and plenty of it, but will wait and see what niece says is color/theme for baby's room.
Time to go dry hair and put on face--don't want to scare the d/w service man!!
Wishing you all the very best this day can bring.

Softened water adds salt -salt is extremely corrosive! That will eat the nychron wire big time! Hot water is softened because we don't drink it. Cold water isn't because we drink that. So don't fill your coffee pot, iron, etc with hot water. Not good for you, too much salt or appliances either!

Re: MONDAY, June 16th, 2025
Jana, wow...that's a lot of information this early in the morning. It does make sense though. I used to write letters to Jonathan every 5 days when he was deployed to another country. I like writing letters. It's becoming a lost art.
Maryz, bummer about the meds causing other problems. Hopefully they'll put you on something else that will work. You can also clean that sticky stuff off your iron with a dryer sheet or two. I heat up the iron and turn it off. Then place the dryer sheet on the ironing board and run your iron over it. Sometimes it takes a couple sheet depending on the crud. I usually put a paper towel under it too. It works really well. I don't use dryer sheets in the dryer, but keep them on hand to clean the iron. What a fun turn your day took. I like those kind of days.
Lyn, nice to visit with your aunt. Safe travels today. You're almost there.
Diane, hope your cousin does okay with her surgery. That's a major decision to make that fast.
Judi, sounds like you had a good day.
Chriss, what are you up to today?
Maryq, I'm sure the repair company has heard that before. lol
Valerie, I bet you are heading out to sew somewhere.
I got on top binding done. I sewed the other one on the front by accident so I need to hand sew it down. I'm off to the Huntington Library today to have Tea with friends. Then we'll walk around the gardens a bit.
Have a lovely day.

Re: MONDAY, June 16th, 2025
Good morning, what a beautiful day it will be today.
I have so many things on my to do list. Mostly cleaning, guess I am messier than I thought. Yesterday I ended up going to the parents house with lunch fixin's and I spent a few hours listening to dad's stories about his travels and his being a fireman and even heard some that I had not heard before. It was a fun day.
I started out yesterday morning here but my fat fingers did something to my post and poof, it was gone. So, since I have a little more time this morning I will attempt to post again today.
Maryz, what fun to have Lara there. sounds like you all have enjoying your time together. And it means the grandsons will be there more often, win, win. It's good to be you. Are you still leaving this morning?
Judi, I bet that Navy is as cute as can be. I love breakfast out but seldom do it. My go to is biscuits and gravy so it's probably a good thing that it's occasional. I love a good meatloaf sandwich if you have leftovers?
Diane, what is red gravy? Sounds like an interesting meal. prayers for your Lynn.
Lyn, safe travels. Hope your aunt is doing well. Cool to be greeted by such a beautiful bird this morning. I have a mockingbird singing to me. Birds are just wonderful.
Jana, I will also be cleaning up a kitchen, maybe I'll see you there? No chocolate crumbs but I did take some plant starts outside to get used to the temps before planting and now I have a messy windowsill where they were. My dad used to often give us lectures, though not to the extent that your DH gives them. Once I found a cartoon that showed a young kid slouching in a chair with is dad using an overhead projector and it said something like, "Eventually Timmy came to dislike his dad's lectures." It was funny, made my dad laugh.
Maryq, what a great find, a tote full of the fabric needed to make the pattern you found. What is the name of the pattern? I guess the Heaven knows what recipe would include manna. I'm pretty sure it goes well with peanut butter. Seems that there is going to be a whole generation of babies in your near future. what fun.
Lori, I keep parchment paper, dryer sheets and ziploc bags in my sewing room. I love that household itmes work for sewing.
The parents will be here this afternoon. Dad has a board to replace and some wires to hide, it won't take him long. Dad also wants to remove a non working wall oven, and make the opening into cupboards. Well my cupboard doors are 30+ years old and not made anymore, so the question is, what to do with the opening.
My stepmom, Judy, offers to help but doesn't really want to. I offer jobs ranging from housework or jigsaw puzzles to folding towels or sorting things, her answer is always that she couldn't do it as well as I do it. When I ask she says she'd be cleaning or reading a book at her house. Truth is, she is playing solitaire most all day on her phone. I do have a charging cord set up for her here. I will take her for a ride, when we get home she sits down and tells me that if I want to go for a ride she will go with me. Maybe I'm wrong but when she uses her middle finger or says something inappropriate, I let her know that it isn't a nice thing to do. I'm probably spinning my wheels.
Enough of that. My dad has decided that instead of my coming to clean his house weekly I should come monthly. There is a breakfast that happens monthly where retired firemen get together and I believe he is the second oldest of the group. I will clean their house and stay with Judy while he goes and has breakfast. He's pretty excited that he gets to go and I am thrilled he is letting me give him a break, like me, he's an "I can do it myself" person.
It's starting to warm up outside, guess I had best close up the house and start my day. Hope you all have a fun day

Re: MONDAY, June 16th, 2025
I'm back for a few.
Still have sore throat but we've gotten the trailer all packed and the house pretty much cleaned. And we're hitting the road as soon as I get back from my appt and other errands. My Chart will msg me at some point. And if not, I have a dr appt on June 25 anyway.
CHRISS - It's good to see you and your dad having so much Chriss/Dad time. And I think when some folks say red gravy they mean marinara or spaghetti sauce. Maybe it's an east coast term.
MARY Q - I never feel the need to match a baby quilt to the baby's room unless things just fall into place. Most of the time baby quilts are not in the room, but out on the living room floor, in the car, or at Gramma's house.
JANA - thanks for the info. Don't think I'll be switching irons weekly though. To plug/unplug, I have to get on the floor, crawl around, open the cabinet that is my ironing surface, remove the contents from the cabinet, to access the outlet. ( It's our old bathroom vanity and has no back.) Then I have to wiggle the old cord head out and the new cord head in - very tight squeeze, replace cabinet contents, close doors, and then try to get up off the floor. I AIN'T DOIN' THAT EVERY WEEK! I'd rather just keep buying irons. But I do appreciate the info/advice. And if my ironing situation changes, I'll revisit it.
DIANE - prayers for your cousin!
LYN - hope your travels go well today!
JUDI - Did you get that Ken mess in the basement all cleaned up??
I'm sorry. I shouldn't laugh.
Got to go. I may not be around for the next two days, so I figured I'd just post twice here!
