SUPPER CLUB - Tuesday, Oct 23

Post by purrfect-lady » Tue Oct 23, 2018 3:31 am

Good morning!

We are very foggy again this morning. We've had a lot of heavy morning fog for past 10 days. Thick enough they are issuing weather alerts. And STILL some people refuse to turn on their headlights. There have been accidents and many near misses because of idiots who think they are saving energy by not using their headlights. THEY can see Ok, but they can't BE SEEN! And here the majority of vehicles on the road are fog-colored! Now you know another one of my pet peeves.

This morning we're going to meet my brother, Albert, for lunch/brunch at a Denny's halfway between our houses. It's a 45-minute drive for both of us. But first, Bill is meeting his guy friends for breakfast 1/2 hour the other direction! I'm thinking I won't have to be cooking tonite! he's going to be tick-full all day long!

We also plan to do a couple of errands, among them, buying lotto tickets. It doesn't improve the odds of winning by much, but we'll buy a few anyway. lol!

JANA - I have to ask - people really have to be taught how to organize a pantry? I have six shelves in mine: The very top is little used items like paper plates, cake decorator, plastic deviled egg carrying case, box of cookie cutters, etc. Next shelf down is large Tupperware containers of extra flour, sugar, oatmeal, Coffeemate, chips. Next down is boxed items, pasta, and a basket of packets/jello/etc. Then comes canned items on the fourth shelf, then a shelf of bottles and jars like vanilla, oils, peanut butter, etc. Opened on the right, unopened on the left, with teas in the middle. And finally, on the bottom shelf, is crockpot, jams, and Ziplocks. Items are organized, label forward, oldest pull date in front. Dogfood/treats/meds are on the floor along with large jug items like white vinegar. We keep about about 3 months worth on hand. Not by design per se, but because we shop at Costco. :o) My cold storage is bins on a shelf in our garage and the garage fridge. What else should I be doing? I love organizing and I'd be happy to hear if you have more hints on how to do it better, (I know you're the queen!)

IRISH - A wedding in July? Sounds fun! Will you be making a wedding quilt? Unless your presence is required at big family Christmas celebrations, I think spending the holidays in FL with your friend sounds like an awesome idea! The first year after Mike was killed the kids and I flew to North Pole, Alaska to my brother's. (kids were 8, 10, and 13). Our first plane ride, Uncle Gene who is a hoot, lots of cousins, snow, and NORTH POLE! SANTA'S HOUSE!! It was a wonderful distraction, doing something totally different for the holiday. Isn't there a place in FL called Christmas Island?

BECCA - at our house, we're the opposite - I'm in a tee shirt, even outside, and Bill is in a tee, sweatshirt, and fleece vest - INSIDE! As to Bill's shirts - when we got married he had an old threadbare long-sleeved teeshirt. After about 5 years he'd never worn it once, but apparently he checked on it every day because when I was purging, I tossed it into the rag bag. He noticed immediately and pitched a fit!! I had to fish it out of the rag bag and he put it back into his drawer and as far as I know, it's still there. And he's never worn it yet! But he's happy knowing he still has it (after 27 years!) and I haven't touched it. Men are funny. I know you're busy with Mark and Denise arriving today. Happy Happy!

CHICKIE - your beautiful placemat and table runner turned out awesome! your mom is going to be so pleased! Maybe I can get a picture up here . . .

As I mentioned above, Bill might not be hungry come suppertime, but I still have chicken that I thawed two nights ago and then he said all he wanted was a fried egg sandwich. So, no matter what, the chicken is going to be cooked today. Maybe I'll put a pot of white chili into the crockpot and then there will be supper ready and he can eat, or not. yay! I have a plan! It always helps to talk it over with y'all!

Whatcha' talkin' about at your house?

I accidentally downloaded the photo of my own table runner. And I can only do one picture per post. So here is mine, and now I will try for Chickies

And this is what chickie did with the same pattern - placemat and napkin, and a round table topper

Good morning!

Mary - thanks for the accident - it is beautiful! I too had the same peeve with people and fog! We rarely get fog here, but now it is the snow! Oh well, keeps my son in a job!

Chickie - purfect set for your sweet Mom! They are beautiful.

As for me, I am very distractable! I have the quilt on my design wall 2/3rds assembled and saw the shiny box of a Christmas project. Of course it called my name. So out it came and I am now working on how to make it into something. It started life as a sew al9ng Christmas quilt here on the forum, but the person leading the sew along quit the forum and never finished. So I have 5 orphan blocks that will be turned into a table runner with a twisted ribbon border. Kinda winging how to make this as I have no pattern.

Dinner - humm, we will see what falls out of the freezer. No leftovers from last night's noodles.

Enjoy,
Jana

Good Morning Everyone,

MaryZ and Chickie, you have both outdone yourselves with such beautiful table runners and other things. This is the kind of thing I prefer to do. Just can't maneuver big quilts any more so going to stick to small stuff like this from now on. You are both such an inspiration to us all with your projects. Thank you for making them and Mary for posting them both. They make awesome gifts for someone. Chickie, I know your mom will love these. Mary, is yours a gift too?

Our supper last night carried over to leftovers for breakfast. We had sausage gravy over biscuits and eggs last night for supper. Enough leftovers and so good, makes a fast filling breakfast too. LOL We often have breakfast for supper when neither of us feels like cooking. Fast simple and oh so yummy to fill up the tummy.

Where is everyone today? I know MaryZ is off and running with her DH and Albert and a fun day. Wish I was off somewhere today but alas Rod is now feeling well again. We live day by day around here, sometimes hr by hr depending on how he feels. It can change so quickly.

His back locked up in night. Stopped in my doorway and couldn't even move to get back to bed from bathroom. I got up, helped him, got the heating pad and a muscle relaxer. Another long long night. We sleep in separate beds and separate rooms or I would never get any sleep. He is at least up walking today but in so much pain again. I just never know what each day might bring.

But God is watching over us, the angels are surrounding us with love and hugs and the helping hands of wonderful neighbors and friends and all will be well again soon.

I got my flu shot yesterday. Drs office was out of senior plus extra flu shot so sent me to nearby pharmacies. I went to Hyvee where we get our meds and I got $.20 a gal off on gas next time we fill up. Can't beat getting a flu shot and sort of money back. But my arm has ached all night from the shot. Oh well, better than getting the flu.

I heard 2 people in area have already died from the flu here so PLEASE GO GET YOUR FLU SHOTS. They are free if you have medicare but lots of drs offices are running out of the senior one already. Us old folks need them worse than anyone else.

Need to get busy this morning. On second load of laundry and one more to go. Pretty outside, azure blue sky, perfect fall weather. Cool but not cold as all the gold and yellow and some red leaves keep drifting down from the woods right behind us and onto our porch and walkway. The cat loves to chase the leaves around or jump in a pile of them.
I love the fall. It is God's time to slowly put the world to rest for the upcoming winter and the first blanket of snow.

You all have a great day. Enjoy fall while it is here. I can smell fireplaces burning in the evening from housing area behind us. The smells of the season are wonderful, aren't they?

God bless, love and hugs to all and prayers for all your needs today. Shirley Mae and Rod and Domino the cat too, outside chasing more leaves or just enjoying the sunshine.

Mary - people have trouble organizing their food storage. How to use it, rotate it and what to have on hand. You have a great start on your! 90 days will get you through many situations.

That is what we are trying to teach - what do you need to feed a family for 90 days, when there will be no grocery store to run to if you are missing something. We have seen in the recent past, storms, earthquakes and loss of jobs that can cause you to need to use that storage. Even, what will you cook on with no electricity. We are giving suggestions as each family needs to do what their family will eat. I am not one who does the freeze dried meals, but more of what we eat normally. My cold room pantry has four large gorilla shelving units in it and each holds my can goods, flour, sugar, pasta, cereals, etc. I keep a spread sheet will everything in there. When i add or remove anything, I mark it off. Just to keep track of what I may have used up and need.

I put in extra, as my kids may need help, as Kate and Aaron often come shop in my pantry.

Once we were in a lockout at BART where Michael worked for nearly three months. We had saved money to pay the mortgage and some grocercies, but during that time, we learned, the hard way of the many things we were lacking in what we had stored. We are hoping to be better at what we have now.

We will also suggest in our teaching that to get started, make a meal plan for your meals for just 7 days. Write down all the ingreients for those meals, including all the seasonings, water, etc. Then you can multiply by 4 weeks and have a basic idea of how to start. We just want to break a daunting task into bite size chunks.

So there you have some of the thoughts we are leaning towards. Still a work in progress.

Good morning all! Unable to respond to all, but have read your messages and wishing you all a very nice day. It is foggy again here. Boring. Has been this way in and off since spring due to wildfires out west and some here. Also the pics are lovely. Thanks.
Hugs!

Wow! Everyone is here at the table before me today! I’m ready to head to my sewing room after taking care of dogs, DH, me (yoga), etc. It’s a fabulous day outside—about 70 degrees! I was walking in a cotton shirt, and before I got home, I had it unbuttoned, sleeves rolled up and was flapping it. Much farther to walk, and the shirt would have been tied around my waist—comfort over looks!

Thank you, Mary, for posting the pictures of our columbine runners and accessories. I knew when I saw yours that it would be perfect for Mom; but she has a round table, so I modified the pattern and made her a placemat and napkin as well. Today I’ll be doing the blanket stitch around all the appliqué pieces. She has a collection of “orphan” or “single” placemats that I’ve made, and it’s always a conversation starter to see what we use. Thank you for looking at our creations!

Mary—you sound like a fun, tasty, day! I hope you win the lotto, or at least a nice chunk of it. I think I may have bought one ticket in my life. LOL! Guess I won’t be winning.

Jana and Mary—I need to pull everything out of my pantry!!! It’s a chaotic, semi-organized mess. I do try to make sure I put the new items in the back as I bring them in. I keep thinking I need a grill or a gas burner just to have on hand if we lose power, but then we just go to neighbors or family and stay out of fridge and freezers.

Jana—what is it with guys that refuse to turn on their lights!!! A peeve of mine as well!

Shirley—DH got biscuits and gravy for breakfast yesterday and today… his request! I understand the one day/hour at a time. It’s difficult to plan ahead for sure. I’ve never had a flu shot.

Tina—thank you! Will that rain make your yard grow again, or has winter dormancy arrived? You are the place to come for dinner! Wish I were closer!!! Have a fun time!

Dinner tonight—still have choices of leftovers. I’ll be working on Mom’s present and taking care of Choc today. I don’t have time to cook!

Bon appétit!

Love the pictures! Beautiful!

I made my husband's favorite: Chicken Noodle Casserole yesterday. I always like to make it near our travel time because it makes sooooo much and I can freezer two meals for on the road. We had a wonderful dinner of it last night and now again tonight.

We have an extra "dance night" this week. A convention center right here in Shelbyville is having a dance tonight. Then we have our regular Thursday and Saturday. This is a special fun week for us.

I got our storage shed cleaned and reorganized, but not packed up for winter. Too early to do that just yet. Usually do that just the day before we leave. But at least it looks so nice and neat. LOL until we start shoving things in there at the last minute.

Have a nice evening everybody.
