SUPPER CLUB - monday, Jan 8th
Good morning,
We are low-40's and rainy all week long. And they are telling us a windstorm is headed our way - maybe - on Thursday. But no snow, sleet, ice, freezing temps, or bomb cyclones (whatever they are!). So I'm grateful.
For not having any football to watch (darn Seahawks!) we sure watched a lot of football this weekend! Four playoff games. So I worked on my big cross-stitch project a lot and my Valentine swap blocks a little. We did go to breakfast at our old haunt. It's changed a lot, but food was pretty good. Even the coffee was good. And then came the end of the weekend. I hope it's not too rainy today because I'm feeling the need to get outside and take Scottie for a long walk.
BECCA - thanks for the 'recipe' for slaw dressing. I'll write it down and do some experimenting. I'm glad you liked the quilt. The colors in it are joyful, I think.
VEL - early Mass here is over by 8:45 so it's always breakfast afterward. Breakfast is my favorite meal and DH doesn't care as long as he gets fed! lol!
CAROLe with the little 'e' - Yes, I set the table, clear the table and fill and empty the dishwasher. I do all the work around here! lol! I remember that swap. My block is the hand holding the GFG flowers. It made a nice little quilt to toss over the back of a chair and I'm looking at mine right now! Prayers for your niece. What a tough spot to be in. I hope a liver becomes available soon. Have they looked into a partial transplant from a living donor?
IRISH - a new car would be fun! What is your old car? I can see you in a sporty, fire-engine red convertible! Our news showed a man driving his convertible, top down, in this past week's NY snow. But the top was broken and he was on the way to get it fixed. Never made it to the repair shop and his car was full of snow and ice! Actually, though, you might consider something with four-wheel drive. I've sure been thankful for mine many times. Merry & Jingle are really growing! Already eating fish! Guess we better start thinking up names for the new babies at Berry College!
CHICKIE - your pasture babies eat better than we do on some days! You spoil them - as you should, of course! Hmmm..... sorghum. I'll have to keep my eye out for that now. For you, of course. The closest we come is Brer Rabbit Molasses. The kids used to put it in milk and we called it "Bunny Milk". the company changed the label once and took off the rabbit. Some friends and I wrote letters complaining and darned if they didn't go back to the rabbit label, only the rabbit was bigger and better!
JANA - that roast, cooked the old fashioned way, sounds delicious! Did you put in potatoes, carrots, and onions, too? Will your choral performance be a one time shot, or will you also sing at church for a while?
BECKY - congratulations on the new little member of your family! I love the name, "Cy".
TINA - did you get all your dad's stuff out of the trailer house? Is a day set for moving yet? When he gets all settled in his new location, your life is really going to get calm again! you won't know what to do with yourself!
Last night we had pork chops and I made extra so we could have pork fried rice tonite. I think I'll chop everything early in the day so when it's time to cook, it's more like 'assemble'. And the bagged chopped salad we tried from Costco was delicious! It came with it's own vinegarette dressing, croutons, and cheese which were all also good! it's a big bag so we'll be eating on that for a while.
What will you be eating on tonite?

Good morning! We are sunny and warmer! We had fog yesterday afternoon and evening, so everything was covered with heavy frost this morning. I was gingerly navigating the wood steps with my buckets and bottles. I feed calves and cows, and one of the cows messed up some fencing. I need to get out there and get it repaired before DH returns from his geezer coffee.
I didn’t sleep well last night. My knee hurt more than usual. It always hurts and is worse—probably because I’ve reinjured it a few times. You will be interested to know that I do have an appointment to see the doctor next Tuesday afternoon. It was the soonest I could get in. He’s a DO and real good with skeletal stuff. There’s entirely too much to do here—I do not have time to be off my feet!
Becky—congratulations on your new great nephew! My niece got all my mom’s cookbooks and recipes. I’ve tried to get various ones from her with no success. How nice to have help with cooking!
By the way… do anyone of you know what “on’t know” is? Every time I ask DH what he wants for dinner, he says “on’t know.” I told him I’ve looked online and in my cookbooks and can’t find anything. I thought it might be Thai or something, but I can’t find it at all. Do your families or DHs request “on’t know”? Seriously, it’s hard to pick something to make when he’s really a bit picky and doesn’t tell me what he really wants.
MaryZ and Carole—yep, same here with all the indoor chores and a bunch of the outdoor ones as well. I have totally refused to learn to operate his riding lawn mower. He assures me I’d love it and want to ride it all the time… Yeah, right! I’ll leave that for him. I remember that swap although I didn’t do it. Very cheerful!
Maybe this spring I’ll go out to the Amish store and see if they might have sorghum. It would be at a health food store or a small, independent store—definitely not a supermarket item! It has a little different taste from molasses, but it’s very similar. Nothing better than sorghum or molasses on toast!
Becca—so glad someone remembers sorghum! Oh, Farmer’s Market… there’s an idea, although the FM in town is very, very small. Grandma got hers in tin pails that were about half a gallon. They kind of looked like paint cans. Grandpa would take his lunch to work in an empty pail. My little red imported sports car was a VW Beetle. I figured 3 out of 4 requirements wasn’t too bad. I loved that little car!
Last night I made DH a cube steak with gravy. After dinner, he was making iced tea in the microwave… when he opened the door, he said “there’s a potato in here.” I’d forgotten to give it to him. He said it was funny he didn’t get something with his steak. I totally forgot, and he didn’t ask, so it was his fault. Guess what he gets tonight… rest of steak, gravy, potato and a salad!
Bon appétit!

We have REAL rain! 1/2 inch so far. Things are looking so much greener, that dull brown coating is washed away. Good thing I got all my roses pruned and DH got all the leaves raked up. It is not cold, though, it will get up to 60 today.
This is a good day for DH to stay inside and plan our itinerary for a two week trip this summer up the coast of CA, OR, and WA to Pt. Townsend to visit my brother. We have taken this 2 times before, but there is always more to see. We stay in some interesting lodges on the coast and spend at least 3 days at Lake Quinault before turning inland. This will be a car trip, Mary, no RV.
This weekend I got involved in restoring my latest Featherweight find. It runs well, but the bed is a little worse for wear, lot of decal gone and someone put tape on for a seam marker and it is has melded with the shellac. I have not been successful in getting it off yet. Everything else is cleaned, oiled, lubed and polished. Then I opened up all the button foot pedals of my 3 machines and cleaned and checked them out. I got so involved I forgot to eat lunch. One foot pedal still overheats and goes from 0 to 60 immediately. I will have to do some more research and try to figure out why. Everything inside is clean and adjusted properly. I love getting into the "guts" of things. I will probably sell 2 of these Featherweights. Then it will be time to get more! LOL
Today is clean the stove day. DH is a great cook but by two weeks, my stove is a disaster. Fortunately I have the burner well of my cooktop lined with teflon and it is a breeze to take out and clean off. Otherwise I think my new stainless stove would be partially ruined already with all the food and liquid spills burned on. I have to get it clean because I am heading south this weekend. By the time I return it will need cleaning again.
Today is also my quilting bee group, although 3 out of 7 will be absent due to illness or other obligations. We haven't met for a month due to holidays so I have done no hand work on my Quatro Colour medallions. I stopped working on my new quilt for a break and decided to get my scraps under control. So I have been mindlessly cutting squares for the scrap/donation box. It feels good to watch that scrap pile go down.
You all are busy with family, animals, friends and life, as usual. Enjoy reading about it all. Prayers to those who need them and blessings to the rest of you for your love and support to each other.

Re: SUPPER CLUB - monday, Jan 8th
Good early afternoon from a very icy covered, SW. Pa...We go from one thing to another but at least, it's warming up and we might have a taste of spring in the next couple of days.....
Mary, Funny story about the man in his convertible...The closest I'd get to a convertible would be a sun roof...I did sit in a very pretty Chevy Cruze the other day and that might be the one...Although Terry is a Subaru person and wants me to get a Forester which I really do like...I hate decisions, just want someone to say, this is the one, sign the check and take it home....I was teasing Nick about getting a Corvette but he only half believed me, not sure why.....
I always loved the idea of going to Mass and then breakfast and really do miss that routine..Just something about starting out the day the "right way".....Talking about those flower swap blocks, I'd better dig mine out and do something with them...I love, love anything with molasses in it but never tried it in milk, but then I didn't like milk, unless it was store bought chocolate and living on a farm, that didn't happen too often, lol...
Chickie, Oh my, when I hear about cows and fencing, it makes me shudder....So many times, we would be out taking care of that fence and/or chasing down elusive cows.....Glad to hear you're going to see a doctor...My new person is also a DO and I think she's great...I have an appointment, I believe the beginning of next month, just a check up...By then, I'm sure all my aches/bruises will be all better, lol...I have some wonderful cream that I've used on my knee, if you'd like to borrow it, let me know...Hey, you're not the only one who has forgotten to put everything on the table, it's OK.....
Becca, warm weather is coming, honest! At least that's what "those" people are saying...Some how, I really can't see me in a four wheel drive thing but who knows...Years ago, we had a tiny Chevette and then we got an extra big station wagon and I thought I was driving a trailer truck, lol..And being short, if I get anything too high, I'd have to carry my little step stool with me and we all know my history with step stools, lol.....
Hope you're having a good day and DH is feeling better...Just think of that warmer weather that's coming......
Well, need to get off this machine...My "money man", Tony is on his way...Always fun to sit and chat with him, super guy and I keep telling him, I'm going to adopt him....
Other than that, I'm staying home today, I hope....We took Jim's recliner to him yesterday and I felt so bad for Nick....He hadn't seen Jim since he's been gone and it was quite a shock...And of course, it was one of Jim's bad days, which made it worse...But, Terry did say, he thought the boys should see, life isn't always perfect and they aren't invincible....
As for dinner, maybe some soup......
You all have a great day.....
Happy eating............
