Psalm 119:113-136
How do we avoid these influences and actions that would cause us to be ashamed? We sustain a love for God's laws and faithfully observe them. We remain safe from temptation by hiding in that secret place of His presence. Dwelling under the shadow of His wings is like a shield repelling all that is contrary to His way of life. Jesus speaks of it as the "abiding" life. In John 15:7 He says, "If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you." We maintain that sense of fellowship with the Father; He becomes our hiding place from the pressures and temptations of worldly influences, only as His words abide in us. That is what the entire Psalm 119 is about--our adhering to the Word of God, learning it, meditating on it, and delighting in it. It is about loving it more than gold and finding it sweeter than honey and anything else we might experience. Of course, our fear of the Lord and respect for His moral nature are also deterrents to sin. Assurance of His judgment on those who ignore His way motivates us to be grounded in His law.
