Oct 17 daily devotion

Psalm 89 1-18

This passage must have been the inspiration for the familiar gospel hymn, 'We have heard the joyful sound, Jesus saves, Jesus saves." For the psalmist declared that those who have heard the joyful sound, the good news of God's greatness, loving-kindness, and righteousness are truly blessed; for they walk in His presence--"in the light of His countenance". We live rejoicing throughout the day because we are lifted up and exalted by His righteousness; we are not left to the futility of our own efforts to live a righteous life. God is glorified when we allow His strength to be manifested in meeting our needs. He is our shield of protection and by His grace we find favor.

What is our responsibility as recipients of such favor and blessings and as those who have had the privilege of knowing the "joyful sound"? We are to declare God's loving kindness, be witnesses to others of what we have discovered, and tell of His faithfulness to succeeding generations.

A singing home is a joyful place to be. I love being in Primary, with all the children, singing on Sundays. Ethan comes and stays with me on Sunday nights, while Sarah is rehearsing the choir and orchestra for the performance of Messiah. He and I sing all the Primary songs he is learning for the children's program in Sacrament meeting. Ethan has a favorite - it tells the story of a young prophet learning to follow God's commands and part of the chorus is - I will go, I will do the things the Lord commands. I know the Lord provides a way, He wants me to obey. Ethan sings with zeal, although slightly off key! A joyful noise!
