Psalm 85
In today's evangelism, there is an assumption that we can personally choose to say the right words and change our eternal destiny. Giving intellectual assent to a presentation of the gospel and praying a stereotype-worded prayer in order not to be accountable for one's sins doesn't necessarily translate into a God-glorifying, life-changing experience. Salvation is a work of God's sovereign grace and is received genuinely only when the convicting power of sin leads to heartfelt repentance. It is not so much for us as for God's glory. Failure to recognize this truth results in a nominal Christian characterized by unfaithfulness and carnal living.
True salvation isn't provided to one uttering a ritualistic prayer for the sake of eternal fire insurance! It comes from humble acceptance of God's grace and out of a desire and commitment to live for His glory. God saves and revives us that we might rejoice in HIM.
In a beautiful word picture in verse 10, God's mercy and loving-kindness are merged with His truth and faithfulness when He pours out His grace to save us. Righteousness becomes a reality among His people and goes before them, bringing peace and prosperity to the land and in our lives.
