SUPPER CLUB - Fri, Aug 19th

Post by purrfect-lady » Fri Aug 19, 2016 4:03 am

Good Morning!

Our day yesterday changed even more! DB Jim was feeling a bit better through the day so we ended up going to their house - only 2 miles away - for tacos and butterscotch brownies. Then we came home to watch the Seahawks lose to Mary Q's Vikings in the LAST 30 SECONDS OF THE GAME! And there goes another of my precious FQ's. Sigh.

Last night we learned more about how Jim fell earlier this week; he was using the kind of walker that has a seat on it, but was using it like a wheelchair, which is NOT what it was designed for. When he hit the threashold at the door, it 'threw' him and he went over backwards, hitting the back of his head. Argghh!! He has four wheelchairs, three regular walkers, four canes, and two walking sticks besides this walker with the seat. We have a hard time getting him to use any of them. And then when he does, he uses it incorrectly and he takes a tumble. Arggghhh!!

CHICKIE - oh, what a story about Odie!! he keeps up with those kinds of stunts, he may buy himself a leash! Bad dog Odie!! so happy he's OK.

CAROL - as you can already see, your brownies were a hit. I might try them again but add a glob of peanut butter. and maybe sprinkle some chocolate chips on top? Fun to experiment.

BECCA - so sorry to hear of your DB's diagnosis. You bet he's on my prayer list! Does he live close to you?

TINA - your mom is her own worst enemy. Even my stubborn old codger of a daddy realized that a second set of ears is never a bad thing. But one thing you can do is write a note to her doctors and inform them of her attitude and that she tends to get things mixed up, so if they could put things in writing to hand her, it would help the family immensely in trying to care for her. Ask them to keep this at the top of her chart so they always see it with each visit. If she won't sign Hippa release forms, doctors can't talk to you, but they can sure listen to what you have to say.

IRISH - I hope, by now, you are over your drearies, Dearie. By the end of the weekend your house will be sparkling! Mind never sparkles - it just glows under a sheen of pet hair. And speaking of that, (whispering here) someone who's name I won't mention is getting a bath today. I bet if you make your trash man some butterscotch brownies, it will drive away his frownies!

So we never did get to our spaghetti and meatballs. But since it's supposed to be 97* here today I think something lighter might be in order - like chef's salad. We usually only get five or less days over 90* but today is going to be a doozy - for us.

How's dinner coming along at your house?

Good morning! Wow! Mary, you are going to be warmer than Kansas today! We are going for 87 with a heat index of 97, so that means the humidity won’t be as bad as some days. I know you will be sweltering today—you may have to go for a drive in the AC vehicle if you don’t have AC at home. At least you have shade! We didn’t have AC in San Francisco.

What is it with men and their not wanting to use equipment like it is supposed to be used??? Poor Jim! Your SIL has her hands full!

I’m going to have to make the butterscotch brownies! DH likes his dessert, but neither of us needs it. We had watermelon last evening… love summer! Unfortunately, the groundhogs and weeds got all of DH’s watermelons and cantaloupes this year so we have to buy them.

We are just going to wait to walk until after the mail man has gone from the neighborhood. I always worry about the UPS and FEDEX guys, because they are on a mission and really burn up the gravel roads! Fortunately, there are only two houses down here—us and DH’s BIL across the road.

The beef tips and fried rice were a hit last night, and I think there is enough for DH tonight. I’ll find something for me… maybe hummus and veggies. Tomorrow is shopping, so the bins are getting empty.

Speaking of pet hair… time to get busy here so I can quilt later…

Good morning,

Seeing that recipe, I looked at it and it is very similar to what we call Chewy cookies. Michael's very favorite. Mine adds walnuts or pecans and then they are cooled, we dust the bars with powder sugar. They don't last long here.

I need to do grocery shopping and bring back my freezer stuff which is still at Sarah's. Last night I made one of Kate's favorites, my chili.

Not much new here. The weather us purfect. No humidity abd barely over 90 for our high today.

So we are back,
Enjoy,
Jana

Carol your brownie recipe was a hit here! Thank you!

I still want those beef tips and rice LOL I'm out of rice...Maybe we'll get some tomorrow...the beef tips are in the freezer.

I'm not sure about tonight's supper....I sure would like a pizza....haven't had one in a long time. I'm exhausted right now, been up since 3:30 ish, maybe I'll feel like cooking after an afternoon nap.

Good afternoon from warm, semi sunny, but very pleasant, SW. Pa.....We're back home, between appointments and regrouping....

Mary, In a way, your DB is very lucky, he could have done major damage...And, being a man, you can't tell them how to use anything! Our VA doctor is ordering a cane for Jim so we'll see how that works....Don't you know, even if you whisper or even spell "bath", those fur kids know what's going on....

Chickie, I went back and read about the "adventures of Odie" and actually shuddered.....Oh my, he's so lucky...Does he think he's a cat with 9 lives??? We don't have much traffic on our street but I do understand how those guys do have to move...We also don't have any dogs on our street but I worry about my feral cat if he ever decided to cross at the wrong time....
Years ago, my dear late friend, Bob, in Florida told us about a young fellow who raced up and down the street and it worried Bob because they, at the time, did have small kids in the neighborhood so, Bob, too matters in his own hands...He got a baby doll, stood behind a tree and the next time the fellow sped up the street, he threw the doll in front of the car....Even though it was a doll, that young fellow learned his lesson and that was the last time, he drove fast up that street...We do have a fellow, old enough to know better, who will speed up the street and I've often thought about trying this on him but he'd probably get out of his truck and bop me with it.....

Becca, Was thinking of you this morning while we were sitting waiting for the doctor...It's no fun but you do what you gotta do and as I told the nurse, it's a day out, lol...One thing in our favor, Jim has no pain and his blood work and all his numbers are great....
Also think of you and hoping you don't encounter that bear on your walks....Beef tips over rice, yum! Giving me ideas......

This afternoon, we're off to see the foot doctor, then pick up books at the Library, get Jim a haircut and then drop off stuff at GoodWill...You know, you hear so much bad about the VA but we have been so lucky...We have a great doctor, who really takes her time and so far the care has been great...The doctor has us scheduled with a Social Worker, just to see what help is available....My problem is getting someone to sit with him during the day if I need to run out...But, we'll see...........

As for our dinner, I'm going to have to check the freezer...I'll bet I have some beef in there just waiting for me to cut it up and turn it into something special...See Becca, you made me hungry......

Happy eating................

One last bit of news:
Eagle Update......Our baby eagle from the Ft. Myers nest has been released....This was the eagle that had been knocked off the branch during the night and then found about a week later suffering from a broken femur...After surgery and rehab, our baby, E8, is now soaring high and free...They had a video of the release and I sat here and cried like a baby, lol...It's wonderful to see him/her healthy again and hopefully live a long and happy life...
In a month or so, the adult eagles will start rebuilding their nest and getting ready for the next season.......

Tina - Glad you enjoyed the Butterscotch Brownies! I keep DiGiorno Pizza in the freezer for when the mood to have pizza hits. I have a grocery store a mile away and sometimes that is too far! lol

Maryz - Glad you got to serve the brownies while they were fresh. I saw those temperatures on the news this morning and thought of you. Stay cool! (Sewing?)

Chickie - This is so much fun sharing a recipe and seeing all of you enjoying it! The beef tips and rice do sound good.

Irish - Glad you have a good doctor at the VA and glad to hear they are sending a social worker. You do need a break. Thanks for the eagle update. Good to hear there is another eagle in the skies!

Jana - The Butterscotch Brownie recipe is from an old Betty Crocker Cooky Book. I looked for it online and found only ones that used a cake mix as a base.

Becca - So good to hear that the two brothers are together. I am glad to hear your DH uses his walker, but as I said my Mom did not use hers correctly and fell repeatedly.

Tonight's dinner will be a repeat of last night.
Have a great day!
Carol

Carol - ours is a handed down family recipe. I use 4 eggs and a pound of brown sugar, cooked in a top of a double boiler until it coats the back of a spoon. Then that is stirred in to flour and baked. Very similar to yours.

Dinner here is a bbq sauced slider. Found the restaurant Chili's rib sauce at the store, so will mix it with ground beef on a slider roll and salad to be somewhat healthy.
