SUPPER CLUB - Thursday, Jan 21st

Post by purrfect-lady » Thu Jan 21, 2016 4:02 am

Good rainy morning! But I won't complain about my weather. It looks to be worse almost everywhere else in the nation.

I am so happy to report that, at least at first blush, this new med really seems to help my brother a lot. He was able to get out of the dining table chair without assist and walk more steadily. AND - word came through that their insurance company is going to pay for it. Happy Day! He even gave himself a shot in the tummy, though I doubt that will ever happen again! lol! My SIL will be doing it.

CHICKIE - you are making progress with your honey - getting him to eat Mexican! How is he with tacos? We eat both beef and chicken tacos. You could leave the seasoning off of his . . . I bet Ava will look sweet sporting her new Valentine wardrobe. When Scottie came to town I made him an big assortment of 'outfits' for holidays and everyday wear. But he grew so big so fast, and his hair is so long (7"!) that his hankies don't even show. I need to make him some new duds, I guess. He's nekked most of the time.

JANA - I love getting more and better storage space! Good on your Michael! Happy to hear Ethan is feeling better. It's been 29 years since my girls and I were all sick with strep throat, but none of us will ever forget how miserable we were. I hope little Ethan is having a better time of it. And that no one else gets it!

IRISH - you will need CHICKIE or TINA to explain carne asada. Tender, spicy beef, I think, and then you do stuff with it. Though I'm with you - I could live without meat. And Bill is OK with a few meatless suppers a week, too. We eat little beef - mostly chicken breast meat here. The research about bicycle riding for folks afflicted with Parkinson's is a few years old. I think some people can dance, too, where walking is difficult for them. It's amazing.

BECCA - you are right - med prices can go through the roof. We heard an interview with a man who set drug prices for a big company and he was asked if he felt guilty pricing a med at $750 for one month's Rx. He said yes. But because he didn't price it higher because his job was to make money for the drug company! But on a happier note, I bet your Raggedy Ann doll is sweet! How big is she? Are you making Raggedy Andy to be her escort? I'm glad you're feeling some better, but we'd be happier with a LOT better.. Prayers continue..

TINA - what's the latest on your dad? I know you texted me that his surgery went well. They'll probably be getting him up today, walking. The days of laying in bed after surgery are over!

Last night I thawed a small container of leftover stew. It wasn't a lot so I added some more potatoes, carrots, and a can of chicken and let the crockpot do its thing for about 4 hours. Turned out pretty good! and there's enough left for tonite. Our freezer is filled with leftovers, so I'm trying to eat them down and save the new food for when all my family comes. We are eating the biggest foods first to make more freezer room. How's that for menu planning?

Bon appetit`!

Good morning!

Mary - what a great blessing - that the drug helps and the insurance will pay! Our grandfather had Parkinson's and it was very hard on him and us as well. Being able to move on his own will boost his morale.

No soup last night, maybe I will get it made today. We will see.

Trying to decide on a pattern for little Baden's quilt. I need to get it done - he is due in a month!

Ethan is being his good little self - good and feisty ! LOL We have to be careful, especially around Sarah with her Graves disease. The Dr., has her on imnuome suppressant drugs to control the Graves. So far, she has not caught it.

Off to figure a quilt,
Enjoy,
Jana

Mary—great news that insurance pays!!! I learned to do subcutaneous shots for my late DH. There was NO WAY he was going to do anything that had anything to do with his care. When I had to give him Interluken II and Interferon shots, I let my fingers do the walking and called every pharmacy in Joplin area for pricing. They ranged from $1,200 per shot to $3,500! Since I had to lay out payment and then get reimbursed by insurance (80%), I chose the $1,200 for the same thing. It was at my regular pharmacy on the way home from work! Your sister might check pricing—they definitely vary! If the insurance didn’t pay, I was going to suggest Canada since you are pretty close.

Last night we took a break from Mexican… we went up to the bar and had chicken fried chicken (me) and chicken fried steak (DH). I couldn’t believe I’d never had CFC before! It was delicious!!! Guess I try to avoid fried, but… YUMMY, YUMMY in my tummy! I only ate half, so another dinner without cooking… Yes, DH eats tacos and taco salad at home. He just doesn’t like to go out for Mexican. He’s not much on going out as it is, so he likes steak best. We meet his former co-workers at the Mexican place, and he gripes the whole way. Such a funny guy!!! I’m used to it, so now it just rolls off me.

Irish—Mary did a good explanation of carne asada. It’s good in tacos, taco salad, tamales… anything. Just wrap it in a tortilla… I used Tina’s recipe. I had some really tough meat that needed slow braising and/or marinating. This was a super way to make it TENDER and fork flaky! I could do without meat as well, but we live on a grass-fed beef ranch, and DH is a carnivore !

Becca—I saw the interview Mary was talking about. What a jerk! He’s on his way to jail for other reasons now. He’s getting his!!! How is your BP? Hope you are feeling better and getting it under control!!! Stay safe in the storm—whatever you do, do not shovel snow!!!

Tonight will be a selection of leftovers… could be tamales or chicken-fried somethings. I think there is some soup as well. We won’t go hungry if it storms… We’re not expecting much… maybe an inch or so. We have freezing mist, sleet and a dusting of snow—we have it ALL! Except blizzard, and I don’t want any part of that!!! Basically the storm is forecast to miss us.

Enjoy!

Dad is up walking this morning, sounds like he's doing pretty good.

I might make lasagna tonight. I need some heat, I'm so cold, hurry up heater motor.

Good late afternoon from snow covered, cold, Sw. Pa...Looking out the window, it looks like a "winter wonderland", being outside it's a nightmare....And, it's only going to get worse...But, I'm stocked up with patterns, fabric and thread, so let it snow.....

Mary, I was thinking and sending prayers all day for good results for your DB and so happy with the news....I can imagine, it's a great boost to the moral just to be able to do little things, like getting out of a chair...And then to get help from the insurance company, double happy....Good things come to good people.....

Becca, I think that's so neat, you making that Raggedy Ann...What a treasure... If they weren't predicting a bad storm in my way, I'd be on my way to your house for some veggie soup....Of course, I'd have to stay awhile and we could solve all the problems of the world, plus talk about the others on the forum, lol....
For sure, you better not shovel...My theory is, come warmer weather, all the snow will melt, so why exert one's self by shoveling...Besides, my hands just don't seem to fit around the shovel handle...I've noticed that with the lawn mower handle, too.....
Please take care of yourself....

Chickie, interesting about the "tough" meat....I doubt if I'll ever be making any of those Mexican dishes, but good to know....Jim used to be a meat and potatoes guy but now, he's eating "strange" food as he calls it....Poor guy never knows what might end up on his plate..Like I said, I like to surprise him, keeps life interesting....

Jana, you'd better get hopping on that new quilt...But, knowing you, you'll have it finished in now time....Glad to hear Ethan is doing well...

Well, our dinner is in the oven....Found some left over steak and decided to make a meat pie...Threw everything but the kitchen sink together, topped it with a crust and put it in the oven....Remember what I said about surprised???? I've always thought, if you don't get sick after eating, then it was a success....So far so good!

Happy eating............
Stay warm, stay safe...........

Oh, Irish! So funny!!! I will tell my DH to eat it, and if it doesn't make him sick to be thankful!!! He eats strange foods now, too. He told the coffee guys he was never hoing to eat keeeeeen-waaaah. Ha! He was sure surprised. He was probably eating crow when he went back and told them he'd been eating quinoa for a couple of years and didn't know it.

The dogs shamed me after brunch into putting on my boots and bundling up for a trek down to Ava's. I took my walking stick to keep me upright on the slick spots. When I came back, I made chocolate no-bake oatmeal cookies and had DH take some to Ava's daddy (oldest DGS) for his 25th birthday. DH is happy because he now has dessert, too.

Tina--glad your dad is doing well!

Becca--when I lived in town I always shoveled snow... of course I was much younger then than now. It wouldn't be as easy here on the gravel. If it got really bad, DH has a tractor with a scoop/bucket. Too bad he doesn't have a blade. We don't need it very often.
