What to wash fabric in to set color and keep from bleeding

I read on a quilter about a few products that will set the colors and keep them from fading and bleeding onto other fabrics. Now I can't find it. One was dawn dish soap and one was mentioned that started with an "R."

Anyone know?

Also I have jelly rolls and don't feel comfortable in prewashing it. How have other dealt with this? Amy problem with color bleeding or with fading or shrinkage? I have a jelly roll in a black and whit design and will pair with some orange and an Asian print.

I don't know about the "R" for the color bleed. On the jelly rolls, don't wash them and have never had a problem with them bleeding later.

The only fabric I (wash) is red but I soak it in the kitchen sink with boiling water until it cools then I line dry it. When I finish a quilt I wash on gentle cycle using cold wash and throw in 3 or 4 shout color catchers pads. That has always worked for me.I would never wash a jelly roll, you may have only threads left.

Shout color catchers or you can use white vinegar in the wash. Lori

The product you asked about is called Retayne. Check at QIAD or LQS.

If you want to use Retayne to make them colorfast, you can do it gently in the sink. Just use hot water and the Retayne, soak for about 15 mins., then rinse well. Use gloves! Then lay them out on a towel to dry. Press if needed, then use however you wish. I would wash hole pieces of fabric in a regular wash after Retayne, but not small pieces like jelly rolls. I've been using Retayne for many years and have never had a problem.
