Need Advice ( I also listed this in the Sew Ins discussion)
I am working on a disappearing nine patch. I am getting close to finishing with it (helps to be retired). My question is this......I have decided that I want to put on 3 boarders. A 3" piece, then a 6" piece and finally another 3" piece. I read that the sides always go on first and that I was to fold the quilt top and measure the middle and that was the measurement of the 1st boarder (something about squaring up the quilt---which I did). Is there any reason why I have to sew each boarder on individually or can I sew 2 of the boarders together then sew to the quilt top?? Is there a well followed rule on this??
Looking for advice so that I don't do something and then have to rip it all out.
Thanks in Advance
Roger

Hi Roger. Well if you sew the borders together and them on, you'll need to miter the corners to make your border fabrics match. It takes a lot more fabric if you do it that way. I usually sew them one at a time. Lori

Roger, if you have already squared up your quilt...this is the way I do it. I do sew the borders on individually, Lori is right. I always cut my side borders first and I make them longer than it measures. I sew them onto the sides of the quilt and then cut them off so they are perfect in length. Then I do the same for the top and bottom, always making them a bit longer than necessary. I always figure it is easier to cut something off rather than try to add fabric! LOL Then do the same with you second and third borders. Good luck!

Hi Roger, I went to Eleanor's camp a couple of time's and they taught me to measure both side's of the quilt then take 1 measurement then cut both side's of the quilt the same length pin them on the side's to fit then sew them on. (example if the right side of the quilt is 83 1/2" and the left side is 83" then I would cut them both 83 1/4" then pin and sew). Then do the same for the top and bottom of the quilt I always sew them on one at a time that's just how I was taught. Hope this helps. Sometime's I start at the top and sometime's I start on the side's I usually go by whatever the quilt pattern suggests. Bev

If I'm reading this correctly you are asking if you can sew the peices you cut for the borders together first , then sew the larger priced border to the quilt top. I would say, yes you can do that. The only issue I can see is the corners , but if you use cornerstones, then it's no problem at all. It will look just like you sewed them on one at a time. Just sew each side, then add your cornerstones to the ends of the top and bottom borders, and sew them on. That's all...it's done!

I've watched a really neat dvd from our quild library, where you sew 6strips of say 5' wide and cut into segments of 4 or 5 or six then but them one after the other forming a very quick border and fail proof. I've made several borders in advance when at crunch time my border is done. Yes, I know that wasn't the question but it just got my mind working.

I haven't read the other answers, so this may be a duplicate, but if you want to miter the corners, you always put all the borders together first, then add more length so they can criss-cross at the ends where they need to be matched up. Otherwise, you can either add each one individually or put them all together first. It makes no difference at all.
And I don't always add the sides first. I don't think there's anyone who really would care, as long as you do both top and bottom before the sides, or vice-versa.
