Go to allfreeknitting.com for free patterns. They show you many different patterns and list the skill level. They have one pattern where you start at the top and work your way down. I have not tried it yet. I signed up for the newsletter and todays includes scarves.
Have fun looking.

Linda,
I have a pattern that starts at the top that has raglan sleeves that I have made many times, in many sizes. It is so easy. You divide the sts at a certain point, and work the sleeves. I use a circular needle and do both sleeves at the same time for uniformity (two balls of yarn). Then you pick up the remaining sts and knit the bottom body in one piece. No sleeves to sew in, only the underarm seam to sew. Raglan sleeves fit everyone as there is no shoulder seam. Try it, I bet you'll really like it, if that is the pattern you have.
