Re: Remembering Mom's Clothesline
Oh my gosh, I remember this with my grandmother. Can't really remember my Mom using the line, seems she always had a dryer. But my grandmother taught us to iron also, we practiced on pillow cases and my grandfather's boxers of all things.
A Friend is God's way of making sure we never walk alone!

I remember the medal pants hanger my mother would do this to my fathers pants and in the winter she would dry them by the radiator.
Also does anyone remember the curtain stretchers?
This was a great memory.

I remember my mom doing everyone of these. She had 2 of us in diapers at the same time. She used to get in trouble for washing diapers on Sunday

Yup, I am from that generation. We had a wringer washer up until I was in high school. Always remember my mother's story: When she was a young bride and a farmer's wife, she and the neighbor lady had a silent contest going on of who got up early enough on Monday mornings to be the very first wife with her clothes already on the line at day break. She said that they could view each other's backyards even though it was about a quarter mile away. too funny!! It was an era of taking pride in your work and proving that you were "good wife".
I still hung my sheets out in the breeze, before we went to full timing. Nothing smelled better than those fresh sheets on your bed at night!!!.
Thanks for the memory.

From April til November our clothes go on the line... in the winter I have an indoor rack that gets the darks (Not all the little socks they get tossed in the dryer.) My kids complain about crunchy towels
Nothing better than sheets or diapers on the line!
I loved the story about the new brides

Yep, I remember all those rules, and still use them today. But, I hang pants by the waistband not the cuffs. And, unfortunately, I do have to do laundry on Sunday.

Re: Remembering Mom's Clothesline
I grew up with my mom using a clothesline, and I was so excited when we moved to NY that our old farm house had a line strung between two maple trees. Unfortunately we had to take one tree down before it fell down so it left me without a place for a clothesline. Then last year, I bought a retractable line and am so glad to have a clothesline again! With the humidity, I have to get clothes out in the morning so they have plenty of time to dry. Back in CO some of the first clothes hung would almost be dry by the time the last of the clothes were hung!
I think my mom still uses her Pepsi bottle with the sprinkler cap when she irons. She doesn't roll the clothes up anymore, but she used to iron everything - and loved ironing. She said when she was growing up that their pastor had several little girls and my mom was hired to iron their little dresses - she loved it. (I hardly ever use my iron, much to her chagrin!)
