Re: Wednesday, JULY 10th
Good morning, good morning,
Not much going on here. I finished tying the baby blankets that I made awhile back so they are ready for upcoming babies. I'm also working on making some more pillows for graduation gifts as graduation is so late here in NYS. My family has been kind of embarrassed that I give home-made pillows as a grad. gift, but I've heard from several kids or their parents how much they still like their pillow several years after they had received it so I keep making them! It is also a good way to use my left-over quilt blocks. The quilt sandwich I was doing on Mon. didn't work out as the backing fabric was too short. I'm not sure how that happened as I dragged several pieces out and had to find one that was long enough, that now is not! Who knows what happened - but with my brain it is anyone's guess. So I'll have to see if I have another fabric that will work.
The church has started a basement remodel project (much needed to deal with water/mold issues) and the children's programs all meet in the basement. So with that not being available to use, all the children's programs now meet in the church office building so I had to move most of my stuff out to help make an office as child-proof as possible. There has been some hair-pulling and a few panic calls, but all in all it should work out okay. The committee in charge thinks the construction will only take a month, but I would guess it will be about triple that amount of time.
Well, onwards and upwards,
Karlene

Re: Wednesday, JULY 10th
Good morning!
I have a hair appointment in a couple of hours - time to get rid of the root rot! LOL Just need to add the highlites back and a trim.
DH is off to get the tractor with Matt this morning - I spent yesterday over at Matt's house - his is starting to paint - to make it all pretty to sell - well, he has never really painted by himself - so I was there for moral support and to teach him how to. We got the ceiling done - I love the purple ceiling paint - goes on purple and dries white - you can see what you have painted and what you have missed! The walls will wait a little while - then I will teach him that too. He has already decided that it was a very smart move to pay a little extra to have the different colors for each room in the new house done by the builder!
Our contractor stopped by last night and we have to hire an engineering firm to come and look at the structural beams in the basement - they are a problem and we may end up in court with this whole issue - uggh! The house is under a "bumper to bumper" warranty - so hopefully the builder will come out and fix it right.
Chriss - in finding a color to go - I found a picture that I love - it is my inspiration for the great room colors - the majority of the main floor - I have a space that I can use as an accent wall of color, but the rest are a light yellow - I can then add all the colors that I want in pillows and other decorations - works as a neutral on the walls - but I hate beige!
Well need to scoot off - sorry for the insommia and the funerals, neither are any fun!
Hugs
Jana

Re: Wednesday, JULY 10th
Good Morning girls!
A DAY OFF! I'm so thrilled to be home today! Lots on my to do list, and after I have a few more cups of coffee I'll be raring to go! Just not sure where to start! Maybe a couple little messes first, then go down and do my laundry and SEW! I'm just itching to get at my Christmas blocks! Think I will check my roommate's DVD library and find a couple good movies to watch or one of the TV shows she has on DVD. I think she has all the years of "Friends" on DVD! Later on this afternoon I'm going to get a hair cut! When I can get it in a teeny pony tail in the back, I know it's time!
Maryz... so sorry you couldn't get to sleep last night. Once in a while I have the same problem.. the brain just won't shut down. And sorry about the trouble with your Bernie! So frustrating when some thing doesn't work the way it's supposed to! You've started your calendar blocks???
Jana... I'm with you....am not a beige person at all! I'm much more fond of just white! Most of the painting that I'll be doing will be white or a very soft soft grey. I'm looking towards selling my house in a couple years and have been advised not to have anything too outlandish. Though my downstairs family room, the lower 1/2 of the walls are deep red! Will take forever to cover that up!
Karlene.. don't you hate that when the backing isn't quite big enough! Same problem here with my niece's quilt. I need only about 8" along one edge! The fabric is from Walmart and I have 2 more WM's I can check to see if they have any more! If not, I'll improvise some how.
Chriss... I was considering getting groceries today, but think I'll stay home and sew instead! I'm going to the cabin this weekend so maybe I'll wait until I get home from there. I think I have enough food to get me by.. If not I'll just stop for bread and milk! There's a couple Sod fields up here, I would love the job of mowing those!
Judi... .I saw something about Vinegar killing weeds on Facebook! Does it really work??? I would much rather use that than Round UP. I have a small tree growing where it shouldn't and I'd love to kill it off! I usually keep a big bottle of it around here for cleaning floors and windows! Tho I have to say I do love my Windex for windows!, I just add a little vinegar to it.
Suzette.... YEAH for days off!!!! Now if I had to studio to go to... that's where I'd be too! but I'm sure going to play in my sewing hole today! ENJOY
Vicky... Oh dear poor Caleb with the Poison Ivy.. My Dad used to get it so bad too and end up going in for a shot, and then a course of Prednisone. The really sucky thing is that it can spread too! Poor kid has to be just miserable!
MaryRosebud.... totally understand about not wanting to go to work!!! Most days I don't want to go either, tho I'm usually fine once I get there... Hope your day goes by quickly..and that the paychecks make it worth it.
Lois... since Chriss couldn't get my groceries for me yesterday, would you want to pick up a few things for me? I'm craving some good grapes and raspberries.
Kathy.... all good wishes for a good report for you DD today! Is she anxious to go back to work? I know you must be so anxious to get home, but you've sure gotten a lot done with your DD. I'm sure you will miss her.
Velda... I have 2.5" strips coming out of my ears!!! One of these days I'll do something with them... one of these days. I have a book with patterns for strips... surely there is something in there!
Cindyg... How is your friend Vicky doing? What a terrible loss to lose such a wonderful friend. Prayers for her and family in the days ahead.
Guess it's now time for me to get in gear. I've been playing with my IPhone and now have learned how to put music on it! I feel so smart! Download the Joann App and you can bring up a coupon for 40% off one item and they will scan your phone! How cool is that!?
Hope you all have a most wonderful day!
Mary

Re: Wednesday, JULY 10th
Good morning! Mother Nature played an evil trick on us this morning!!! I woke up to the sound of RAIN!!! By the time I sat up and looked out the window, it stopped. 60 seconds of shower is NOT long enough!!! I will be watering again this evening! We hit 101 yesterday and going for it again today. I really prefer the 80s!!!
Tinker Bell’s trip to the vet was uneventful. I had pulled a sticker from her foot a couple of days before, and the Vet said that had been the problem and it’s very common now with the pasture grass going to seed. He treated a dog earlier with eight of them stuck very deeply into its paw. No more limping for Tink, and she’s caught up on shots for a year. She was so mellow and well-behaved yesterday, but then she always is! Odie… well, let’s just say that he had on his harness and is very cute!!!
MaryZ—I didn’t have any trouble sleeping; it’s just that I had crazy dreams, nightmares and leg cramps… Can you contact Bernina directly on your 430? Maybe an e-mail or letter to an executive would get some warranty action! I hate intermittent problems with anything electronic (or a vehicle)!
MaryQ—have fun on your day off!!!
Jana—I feel for you with your house problems. I had built a house right before DH and I got married. It had problems, and the contractor left town because others had been having problems, too. It was cheaper to get the problems fixed myself than to try to find the contractor and add myself to a long line of lawsuits… The sad thing is, this guy had been a good contractor and was friends with my late DH. Good luck to you!!! Your problems sound much more serious than mine were. I am not a beige person, either!!!
Karlene—do you have any scraps from the front of your quilt? When my backing is too short, I will add strips or blocks in the backing. My late MIL loved hers and would turn the quilt back so the “pretty” part of the backing showed as well. She had no idea it was the result of an “oops” in planning the backing! My “Kitchen Quilt” was the same thing. I had block fabrics but not enough backing…
Cindy—I feel so badly for all of you in the loss of Ed. The only thing I can say is that he did not have to suffer over three years with a terminal illness, pain, loss of quality of life… and, there was time to say “Good bye” and “I love you” that a heart attack may not give you.
Chriss—Tinker Bell loves belly rubs! She is a real pet ho!!! Odie likes snuggling. I have a warm vanilla color throughout my house except for my sewing room. I have the open floor plan, too, like yours. I like the neutral so I can use whatever with it.
Vicky—I have taken a poison ivy “helper” in February. It was three little vials (maybe a teaspoon) of a clear, tasteless liquid containing some of the poison ivy—like a vaccine. I got it from a compounding pharmacy. If you were interested, maybe you could order some next year for Caleb. I think it really helped me. Three years later, and I was picking blackberries in the middle of it. I have just a very few little bumps—nothing I used to get just walking by it without touching! Can you give Caleb Benadryl for the itching? That is my “cure” for itching!!!
Sorry I can’t chat with everyone—need to get brunch started and pass over the floor with the dust mop…
Enjoy today!!!

Re: Wednesday, JULY 10th
Good morning.
Maryz, sorry you couldn't sleep. Hope you get a nap today. I have always taken my machines to Quality Sew and Vac for their spa treatments; however, at the last retreat I went on, I heard a few people talk about how unhappy they were with their recent service. Not sure if they changed to a different repair company or what. Makes me kind of hesitant to drop off my Pfaff for a much needed spa treatment! I hope all is well with Bernie this time.
Mary/Rosebud, hope you get a nap in today, too! I hear you about work....
Lois, I know what you mean about car rides and kids. I used to fear that my youngest son would never be able to drive....every time he got into a car, he was fast asleep within a couple of minutes. Even when he got older! LOL
Vicky, poor Caleb. I hear that Jewel weed is great for poison ivy. Supposed to grow around ponds/creeks, etc. Hope he gets some relief soon.
Suzette, hope your storms are mild. I miss a good thunder/lightening storm. All we get here is just wind and rain! I do believe I heard thunder a few weeks ago....not sure but it also could have been mortars from the firing range at Ft. Lewis! LOL
Kathy, fingers crossed for your DD. Hope she gets relief soon and you get to head home.
Judi, have fun with the grands. I have those binding clips but have not used them yet. Did you get the red ones or the bigger green ones?
Chriss, hope you find something delish for lunch. I usually just have a frozen dinner for lunch....blah! LOL I am doing stacked teacups for the paper pieced blocks. The ladies who are hosting this swap had everyone choose their own fabric line/colors which makes it a little more difficult deciding what piece of fabric goes where. I am making each cup (there are three) a different color but still want it to coordinate with the other two cups and the saucer, etc...and, of course, just when you get that one block done you have to figure it out again for the next block which has totally different fabric! One thing I know for sure, I will NEVER do another swap where everyone chooses what fabric they want their blocks done in. Lucky for me, my friend went online and found almost all of the fabrics that people had chosen....she bought enough for both of us to do our blocks and I paid her back!
Velda, wow, sounds like you got a lot of sewing done yesterday! Wish I could say the same! LOL
Cindyg, I am so sorry for the loss of your friend. I know the next few days will be very hard for all of you. Prayers for you and also for your dear BFF, Vickie and her family. My friend here at work has a friend whose DH just passed in March. He was the picture of health. He developed a cough which they thought was bronchitis. She made him go to the doctor who prescribed some meds. Over the weekend, he hadn't started to feel any better, so he went to his VA doctor. The said "Pneumonia" and prescribed an antibiotic cocktail. Said he would feel a hundred percent better in 24-48 hours. He didn't, so he went back to the doctor. They ordered a scan (maybe CT???), anyway, when they went back for the results, turns out he had stage 4 lung cancer.....had not felt sick at all until a couple of weeks before. He died about a week and a half later. I have never heard of anything like this before. She said the doctors called it a "Burning Bush". He was in his early fifties.
Karlene, hope the remodel project doesn't take too long. I think those grad pillows sound like a lovely present.
Jana, wow, that is terrible about your beams. I hope the builder makes it right for you.
Maryq, I hope you have a fantastic day off! Those phone coupons are awesome! Most of the time, I forget to use them, though. LOL
Well, guess I had better get busy. Since we have our forced day off, work will be piling up. The other 'civilian' in the office will have her furlough day on Fridays.
Hope you all have a wonderful day.
Hugs,
Mel
Chickie, sorry, I was typing over you! That rain was just a tease....not fair! LOL Hope it cools down for you soon. Glad Tinkerbell did not have any problems.

Hi,
Back for a few minutes. Busy today with embroidery.
Our son is making Corn Hole game boards with USMC theme.
I am doing USMC emblem in embroidery for the bags.
He did one set for himself and now his brothers want them.
I will get bags done so I can take them to him instead of mailing them.

Re: Wednesday, JULY 10th
Good afternoon from soggy, sunny, very humid, SW. Pa....We've had some really bad storms around here....A lot of flooding and lots of roads closed.....
Just wish we could send some of the rain to Kansas.......
It's been another lazy day for me....Very few uglies but have been working on my quilt....I just need a couple more blocks for a full size but now I'm thinking I should make it bigger.....I certainly have the fabric!
Mary and Chriss, I think you 2 are on to something with the sizing making me itchy....From now on, I'll prewash....
I have to brag! Kathy's oldest DD, Jackie, just called to tell me she was offered a full time teaching position with a fantastic salary...She has been doing substitute teaching and has been very busy but this is what she really wanted....I am so darn proud of her......And we'll get to see her, she's coming home this weekend....Doubly excited......
Mary, I agree with Lois, I think a long ride would help you sleep....I don't think there's anything worse than being awake during the night (well except itching)......
Chriss, I'd love to send you some thunder and lightening....I think we've had enough and more than happy to share.....What colors are the walls in most of your rooms, now? I've wanted to paint just one wall in the living room or dining room a darker or different color but so far, haven't been able to convince Jim.....But, since he's hung up his painter's pants and cap, I just might get my way...
A funny story about the painter's cap...Any time the kids would be helping him paint, they'd try to get his cap to wear because he always said, "you wear the cap, you get you got union wages."
Well, I have a feeling it's time for me to clean out the frig and find something for dinner.....
You all have a great rest of the day..................
Just wish we could send some of the rain to Kansas.......

Re: Wednesday, JULY 10th
In case you asked...the viegar and salt and soap works to kill poison ivy but it might take a few applications...I also use it is the sidewalk cracks and anywhere I don't want things to grow....Everyonce and a while I get a stubborn weed but it mostly works with out poisons.
I use the red clips Mel I,like them. Cindy I use the glue method to make the binding but find the binding hard to needle if I glue it too.
Watched the kids and watched the storms too....now they say we are DONE. No more rain or humidity. We will have nice 70s with 60s and 50s for night....Woot Woot...maybe Ill get back to weeding (what am I saying?)
