Singer Featherweight machines

I might be looking for a Singer Featherweight. What should I look for? I don't want a dud.

Where are you going to be looking? Places like e-bay, or in your local area? I could give you a few tips about e-bay.

Running! See sample stitches. Can you try it? Who is selling it? My first one I got from the daughter of the original owner. The case wasn't perfect, but the machine sewed like a dream, had the original manual and all the feet. (Lost it in the fire.) The one I have now I got from the repairman that works on my mom's and my machines. He had gone through it, and it's pristine and sews like a dream. My DD purchased one at a flea market, and it seems to be a good machine. She may bring it over and have my repairman service it. She was able to check it there for stitch quality. Do you have someone who could look at it with you? Will the seller give you a 30- or 90-day warranty? My Featherweight was the first machine I replaced after the fire. I purchased quarter-inch feet for it--one with the guide, and one without. They are handy little machines for traveling and for piecing. Good luck!!!

I bought one from a gentleman in England - it was totally re-conditioned - he did a great job on mine. Had all the info on when it was originally built and had all the attachments that went with it. Even a copy of the original owner's manual on how to use the machine and keep it oiled.

As he said - there was no musty smell in the carrying case and that was a good thing.

My machine runs quiet. It is original paint and decals - I paid around $450 for it - that included the shipping from England.

I wish I had his website still for you - he had many machines on the site and you could look and see what he had and what prices he was charging for each machine.

In the price I paid, he changed out and put in a motor that would run here on 110 volt electricity in the United States.

I have seen many machines that have been re-done on EBAY and they wanted more than what I paid - most had been re-painted in odd colors. I wanted one that just sewed - forward and back - so I could haul it to classes that I was taking/now teaching.

The belt on my machine was new and it was greased and running beautifully when I got it - still is!

So any more questions - just ask - I love my little featherweight! It is only one week older than I am!

Bill did all the shopping for mine as it was a Christmas present. He even got a 1/4" foot! It's an original and came with a hard case. no musty smell. And you know he took that 8 hr Featherweight maintainance course at the Houston Quiltfest. That was just maintainance, not repair. He took it from Nova Montgomery, I think. I'll ask him if he has anything more to say. But you might google Nova. Pam knows of her, I think.

Make sure the instructions on how to thread, change needle comes along with machine.

I made a nice $10.00 discovery in garage sale years ago, for a Singer and desk. When home, couldn't get it to work without instructions.

Do you have a MCC Mennonite Central Committee where you are? In Wpg they gather old machines, a vltr repairs them and resales at very good price.

MCC equivalent to thrift store.
