slipping ruler

good morning from north carolina I have a question and I am a new quilter when I am cutting my fabric sometimes my ruler slips and messes up my fabric I use a rotary cutter but the ruler will slip what kind of rulers do you all use ? I enjoy reading the tips on this board I am retired and well just needed something to keep me busy so I picked quilting I hope that was not a mistake thank you and have a great and blessed day

it's not a mistake...

there are quite a few things that help a slipping ruler to not slip...

you can get rulers from creative grids that have little rough spots that grip the fabric as you hold them firmly while using your rotary cutter..

there is stuff called invisigrip which is a film that you put on the back of a ruler... there are sand paper dots for the back of a ruler.

none of these thins will mess up your cotton...

I haven't had luck with the invisigrip but others think it's wonderful... I have learned that if my table is the right height I can put more weight on the ruler and hold it firmer while I cut...

Thank you I will try the creative grid ruler and get some dots for the slipping ruler. well right now I am just putting some squares together I love the els diner quilt especially the apron and pork and beans was going to order the book and try that love the big basket in the middle I have ordered a lot of fabric lol so that is a start. oh and I like the twister well I did not mean to talk your ears off but I guess I will be ok someone told me that if I retire I will go crazy but I got news for them Iam smarter than the average bear lol

I put the little felt pads on my rulers and they barely move with them on it

I agree that using some form of gripping on the ruler helps, but one thing that I have found really helps me is hand placement. The hand that is holding the ruler needs to move up the ruler as the rotary cutter moves up the ruler. So, hold and cut, stop, move your hand, hold and cut. I hope you understand what I'm trying to tell you.

Another trick I learned after years is to place the little finger of the hand holding the ruler OFF the ruler, but against the ruler. It helps to hold the ruler in place while cutting.

I bought the little rubber things about the same size as the sand paper dots and put on the underside of my rulers. They very rarly move. Also, it certainly does help to have your table higher up. I have mine about waist high or higher. I bought those "bed" risers and put under each leg of the table and they work perfect! And they didn't cost me an arm and leg! LOL

Triadquilter... I had the same problem.I found some clear strips that you stick to the bottom of your ruler. No more slipping! I think they are called grip strips if I remember right.

I use the 'Rule Steady' to keep my rulers from slipping. It is a little pricey, but I have found it well worth the money.
If you go on the internet and just type in Rule Steady, there are demostrations showing it and how it is used. Hope this helps.

I have the invisagrip stuff on all my rulers. This cuts down on the slipping a lot, you still have to position your hand on the ruler to steady as much of it as possible. I did buy that big gripper with the suction things on it and I think it's one of the worst things I have used for cutting material. Some people like it but I'm just not one of them.
