burp cloths

Post by gramjudyquiltz »

I want to make some burp cloths for a niece who is expecting her first baby and would like to know if you put anything in the middle so when the baby spits up it does not go through, or does two pieces of flannel work good enough.

Thanks

I use two pieces of flannel - but my daughter likes it best when I use diaper flannel - it soaks up the little messes better. I have also used actual cloth diapers and cut up the brand new ones to back the flannel top.

I also use a wing needle and a mock hemstitch on my sewing machine to make the holes - they are evenly spaced - then I can crochet through it. When I do this I place the two pieces of flannel wrong sides together and stitch around the burp cloth - then I crochet a pretty edge on it. No bulky seams and they work very well - I have done many many receiving blankets and matching burp cloths this way.

Congrats! and Good Luck in doing them - they are fun and wasy!!

Like xteacher, I also use prefolded diapers. They come in one dozen packages, reasonably priced at Target, (where I bought mine) and it's real easy to turn them into burp cloths. I just sewed a decorative piece of fabric over the middle, padded area of the diaper. I've been giving them away as "grandma gifts" as I was lucky enough to find flannel printed with the words, "I love Grandma". They are real cute!

as gifts I was given terry cloth rags shaped like a large 8, I never had a problem with leaking through. They were decorated with decorative stitching around the edges.
