making bias binding

i have a hard time figuring out how to start when im wanting to make bias binding strips im not talking about the tube or continuos binding just plain old cutting the strips i think i will need about 7 of them its a small quilt but i want it to be bias because its stripped so how do you do it i am just drawing a blank on how to do it correctly

Try these simple steps - take your rectangle of what ever length by the 45 inches wide (12-14 inches is a good length) - place on your cutting mat - single thickness - then take one of the selvege edges and lift it over the fabric to make a triangle on one of the sides -(line up the cut edge of the fabric to the selvege edge) you now have a piece that the fold is on the bias - I then cut on that (45 degree angle) a strip that is 2 1/2 inches wide (with it still folded on the bias - this will make you a bias strip that is 5 inches wide when you have unfolded it - I then can cut 2 strips from that piece that are 2 1/4 inches wide for my binding. With a little waste to be sure I am straight

You now also have a bias edge on the remaining piece of fabric and can cut your strips from that as well - then just join them to make a long piece to fit your quilt.

I hope that I have not confused you too much - just remember that a bias is a 45 degree angle and you can do it!

The ruler that is sold on the website makes it very easy. I have one of them. It is the 2 1/2" wide bias ruler and makes a whole lot out of a half yard of fabric.

I do mine like Jana. You don't need any special ruler. There is a 45 degree line on most cutting boards, also but Jana's way is the best.
