cotton or poly cotton

Post by Linda71 »

Is there a way to tell if a fabric is all cotton or if it is a polycotton blend?

hi Linda... I think there is a burn test... you take a snip of the fabric and the way it burns with a match will tell you....

I would ask auntjana on this forum... I betcha she knows... join us in the sew in... she is in and out of there and would be happy to answer this much better than I can...

Chris is partly right! LOL - I have many questions too!!!

There is the burn/match test - if it burns - it is cotton - if it melts it is a blend that has polyester in it. It is hard to tell by just the feel as they put finishes on the fabric that masks the polyester. Also read the label on the bolt - it will tell you.

So if it is from a flat fold or a garage sale - and you buy it - try the test at home - you can use a poly fabric in a quilt - I would not use it in a heirloom quilt - a utility quilt that will get quite loved and used would be fine.

Hope that this helps
