I don't pre-wash - just because I am being lazy! I totally understand doing it though.

Re: wash or not to wash
I usually wash my fabric. I just used Bali Pops (2-1/2" strips) and I didn't wash them first. I didn't like the feel and smell of the fabric but I was afraid the strips would fray if I prewashed them. So I will not wash the backing for that quilt before I use it and just pray it doesn't get wonky on me when I do wash it and I'll use Retayne.
If I have bright fabrics or darks, I give them a vinegar bath and then wash them and dry them. Lighter colors I just wash and dry. Then I use Mary Ellen's Best Press and iron the fabric just before cutting it.

I don't prewash either unless it is requested for swap. I have not had any problem with the dye running but I always use Dye-Grabber in the wash anyway. I think it is personal preference although I believe some people are allergic to the smell of the finishing process in the fabric.

I am not a pre-washer either - there is a break to that rule - if it is a dark color that looks and feels overdyed I will rinse that piece in my sink changing the water often until it appears clear. Then let it dry - not putting it in the dryer.

I always prewash. I had rather have srinkage or fading before I use a fabrin in a quilt than after the quilt is made.
