Question on a border

Post by Chrissy1 » Fri Jan 15, 2010 1:05 am

Finally after longer than I want to tell, I have the sawtooth star mystery quilt top done. Well, almost done. At the moment it measures 45 x 59. That included one 2 3/4" border which is in a medium dark civil war type pattern fabric. I am wondering what I can do to make it a bit larger before it gets quilted. Can I add another border and if I do how wide should it be and should I go lighter or darker. The top itself has maroon stars and stars made from a cream color with tiny maroon dots. The solid squares are the cream with maroon dots. I would so appreciate any help that anyone might be able to share. I wish I could send a photo but our daughter hasn't taught me how to do that yet.

wow Chrissy, sounds like a beautiful quilt.....

the 2 3/4 inch border could be an "inner border" then you can make maybe a 4 inch or whatever size you need for an "outer border" I am not sure about the color to use...

in the photo section I made a tossed 9 patch and it has an inner and outer border....

how big did you want to make the quilt?

I think it's quilters cache.com that has a section on borders with different patterns...

can't wait to see what you come up with.

You might want to audition different fabrics to use in the next border. That final border can change the whole look of the quilt.

Chrissy, how big do you want the quilt to be?? How large are the blocks? I wouldn't go too big on the next border, sometimes it makes a small quilt look out of proportion..without seeing the quilt it is hard to determine.

Thanks everyone. I am thinking on this for a bit. I don;t want it to huge but just maybe lap size enough to cover up with, not to cover a bed or anything. I am going to take all of the suggestions you all have offered here and come up with a plan this weekend. I am even considering cutting down the 2 3/4 maybe. I will see if I can get our daughter to come over this weekend and hook me up with the photo stuff. I have the kodak easy shart thing on the computer, just need someone to teach me how to use it.
Thanks again everyone
