Stitch size

Post by searchfamilies »

I been watching some of Eleanor's shows & she mention different sizes of stitches which started me thinking dangerous as that may be lol
Anyway what size & length is the standard size i know each machine can have it setting different which makes me wonder i have a Silver Viscount 9500E & it default setting for straight stitch is 3.5 x 2.5 & can go to 7 x 4.5 so how do i know what i should use i have when doing blocks & stitch in the ditch use the default setting
I am trying to master the binding by machine as being disable & have problems with my hand would like to do it by machine but have not as yet been happy with it so what can you suggest for stitches & size for doing the binding also look forward to hearing your comments & ideas oh by the way i am in the UK

Hi to the UK!
I have a Bernina 440. When I turn my machine on, the default is 2.40.
I'm glad you asked this question. I did a web search and found this helpful web site that shows the conversion of millimeter setting to stitches per inch. Hope this helps. I'm going to print it off and keep by my machine.

http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/m ... r-you.html

I'm working on a mystery quilt right now and they recommended a setting of 2.0, which equals about 12-13 stitches per inch. Obviously more stitches will hold fabrics tighter together, no little gaps. That is what I'd do for sewing on the binding. I usually set my stitches somewhere between 2.0 and 2.4. Of course the more stitches, the more to rip out if you mess up. Oh, well.

Hope this helps.

Welcome UK. Lived in Steeple Aston, Oxfordshire in mid 60's. Former husband stationed at RAF Upperheyford. He was USAF. I loved England so much and need to get back there one day. So I will have a CUPPA in the morning and give you a TOAST and swoosh it out my door and over the pond to you.

Sure like the Scottish lady Susan Boyle. What a voice?

Hugs

Cheers

Janice, hi!
If I understand your question right...I use a 2.0 setting on my machine for piecing...when I quilt on the machine, I set my stitch length to 3.5. To sew on my binding I go back to the shorter stitch length maybe 2.2. I hand sew the binding to the back, because I have hated the way the machine stitching looks...but there are people who do it successfully..I'm just not one of them! LOL!
