Help with final block measurement

Post by Jmeyer4 » Sun Nov 08, 2009 11:44 am

Hello everyone -
I'm needing some help on block measuring. I hope I can explain myself so that you understand -

Say you have a 9 patch block that SHOULD measure 6.5 inches square. SHOULD is the key word here. When you have 30 or so blocks, they don't always turn out the right size, at least not for me.

Is it better to leave the blocks that measure 6.5 inches intact and the ones that are off (under measurement) also or is it best to just square all your blocks to the same size - which will likely be a bit under size (maybe 1/8 inch). I know the quilt will be off a bit in the end but I'm just not sure how to do this.

Hope you can help -
Thanks,
Jackie

Jackie, even thoughit would be a little smaller, I would square up all the blocks to the same size. They will go together better. You can always adjust the finished size by adding a little bit larger border to get the final finished size to be correct(?). Good luck.

Thanks very much Mary. I figured it should be this way but just wanted to be sure before I went ahead and cut.

Thanks for helping -

I agree with Mary but must add this comment. Be sure the seams match. When you put the blocks together the seams must match so I would sew a row of the blocks together then trim them.

I have found if the blocks are off only by a bit -- and 1/8" qualifies in my opinion -- that they will go together w/o trimming. Just make sure your seams match.
