Using flannel backing

I am finishing up a Lover's Knot queen size quilt for my DD. The top is made of cotton, but she would like a flannel backing. I know I need to prewash and iron the flannel before using it. Does anyone have any tips or any information to help me. Also, is the warm and natural batting good to use with this quilt? This is the first queen size quilt I have ever made. Will post a picture when it is done. Thanks to anyone who can help me.

I made a flannel quilt with a flannel back and put thin battin inside.... it is way too warm for California... but I had no problems with quilting it ( in the ditch) I would just suggest a light weight batting since flannel is already warm....

I would suggest you run a machine or surger stitch along the end edges before prewashing, otherwise, you will have more strings on the ends and less fabric.

I do not pre-wash flannel. I will behave just fine when it's washed after the quilt is done. JMO, Amie )

I really like quilterbee's idea of not prewashing, but will that be ok, being the top is cotton? I have heard that flannel shrinks more than cotton. Thanks to all for your help.

I almost always back my quilts with flannel for that 'snuggly' effect. I always prewash all my fabrics, flannel included. And I'm a fan of Warm and Natural. For our climate, at least, it's a good weight - not too warm and yet warm enough. But if you prewash flannel, you will have strings. So pinking, stitching, or even snipping the corners will help prevent that.
