I need a Pattern....

HELP PLEASE??!!

my best friend and her sisters want to make a queen size quilt for their mother for Christmas. None of them quilt, and they know how to sew.. the basics... but don't do it very often, so I'll be teaching as we go. Anyone have a suggestion for a pattern, that isn't too hard, but doesn't looks super simple? They already ruled out a nine patch. They really like the Mariner Compass.... but I'm not even brave enough to try that, let alone try it with 3 rookies.

Any suggestions would be helpful. And your thoughts as to if we can get it done by then(knowing how busy they are... I have my doubts) We would have to be done by Thanksgiving, in order to have it quilted.... and it would take me a couple of evenings to get it bound....

Try an Ohio star without inner sashing - set them next to each other and see what alternate pattern shows up by changing a corner block to a half sq triangle or like the one that I did Aaron or a autograph block - and have all the kids and grandkids put their name on it

how about a dresden plate... if you make the ends pointy instead of curved it will resemble ( with a lot of imagination) a compass...

Kyna, you're right...I'd stay away from a Mariner's Compass if you are teaching new quilters.

If you are feeling brave, what about the Radiant Star? Similar motif, challenging to make, but Quiltsmart makes a fusible that makes it a LOT easier to make...or so I have been told. I did mine the QIAD way...and as I said, it was challenging, but I got it done!! Just a thought.

The rail post is a real simple pattern and using the a nice combination fabrics, it comes out just beautiful. You can use either 3 or 4 different fabrics for different looks. I could easily see red green, white, and maybe a gold or silver fabric or just red, gree and white. carol/kittyquilt

I'm going with the log cabin. You can achieve so many intricate looks, merely by placement of the blocks. That was the first block I tried when my SIL was teaching me. And El's method makes it even easier. That's MY 2 cents worth!

look at Orion's Star it is a combination of a star and log cabin and looks wonderful

Thanks for all of the input! We've decided to make a smaller wall hanging, one that has a calendar -so she can keep track of all of the birthdays.

I'm drafting it and designing it. I'll post pics when we get it done!
