Wool Batting.....

Post by PamM » Fri Jul 24, 2009 1:50 am

Hand quilting through wool batting is wonderful. But, I got a question about wool batting and moths. Has anyone got any concerns about this?

Hi PamM, I don't think I've seen you here before :)

I have no concerns with moths more than any other storage issue. There are all kinds of issues with storing fabric & quilts. Acid free is important, out of direct sunlight, refolding (rolling)periodically. I know that if you use *real startch* & don't wash it out of your project, it can attract silverfish & other creepy crawlers as well. UGH!

I've not really done any hand quilting, but I have just adore wool & the hand sewing I have done with wool batting has been wonderful. I understand that silk is really amazing too.

Perhaps someone else can shed some insite to this topic :)

Boy, PamM, I'm not sure about this...but I would assume that it is treated somehow to prevent moth infestation. It's expensive so that would be my guess. Maybe find the name of the mfg. and ask them a question online, they probably have a website.

If you find out, let us know!!!

Thanks so much for all the information. I did contact Hobbs and Quilters Dream.
Quilters Dream sais that there should be no problem with moths or any other type of insects. The only problem they have had is how the quilts are stored. If stored properly, there should be no problem because the batting in sandwiched between the quilt top and backing. They say, of course, NO PLASTIC EVER.
Again, thanks, for your help.

A friend of mine decided she no longer wanted to quilt so she gave me three king sized Hobbs Tuscany wool quilt batting. I was looking at one and noticed moths had eating an area on it. Upon looking at the other two I noticed they also had moth holes in them. I had one identical to these in my own stash. I went upstairs, got it and noticed it also had moth holes. I don''''t know what to do with them now. Each is king sized. Would it be ok to just discard the damaged area and use the remaining batting, or should I discard all four? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I looked online and found a quilting board. Someone had asked this question. Main answer was to put batting in a freezer bag, seal it and leave in freezer for 48 hours.
