Re: Is it okay to use a sheet for a quilt backing?
Glad to hear that others have done this as I ,too, have used sleeting new and used. Sometimes I have even used some of it in the front of quilts. Only once have I been disappointed because the cotton blend pilled with a little use. I have been doing it less as I have been making fancier quilts. I would recommend all cotton, but if you are just making a quilt to use, go for the sheet if you have one.
I backed one of the first quilts I did with a second hand good quality sheet (washer had eaten a corner of the border on the sheet) that still looks great (the quilt was also secondhand fabric).

Heard they were hard to quilt through, so I never have used them. The 100% cotton would be OK.

I have used sheets on my quilts for years, especially the ones that are for everyday use. It is nice to have just one solid piece of material rather than sewing differnet sections together. The sheet always outlast the quilt top.
Personal note: Some of today's sheets have a higher thread count and I have noticed that they are harder to quilt especially if you are hand quilting.

watch your thread count. Priscilla hates sheets she will skip stitches and break needles unless they have been washed several times I dont know if it is the thread count or the sizing

I've been using 100% cotton sateen sheets for backings the last few years and they work great and are beautiful to touch. I machine quilt and have had no problems with them. I buy them on clearance, usually get the king size set and that will give me 2 backings plus extra fabric with the pillow cases. The flannel sheets are also great for backing quilts and they go on clearance at great prices.

i have several quilts that were made by my mother in law yrs before my xhusband was born, they are between 60 and 70 yrs old and have been used and washed lots of times, at first in the old wringer washers then later in the automatic washers. she used old sheets as backings and for battings she used old blankets that she got at garage sales. they are all hand pieced and hand quilted. i would say if it was good enough for our old timers to use it is fine for us. and though the fabric was cheaper made back then these have held up just fine. quilts were made out of scraps and anything they could find. very few people had the money to buy fabric just to make a quilt.

I have used a sheet plenty of times. I try to get the nicest one I can find, with a nice high thread count. Since I use my bed quilt as a blanket, I like the feel of the sheet.
