spaced stitches

Post by esj11978 »

Hi! I am new to quilting and I am a little stumped on the amount of stitches you need per inch while quilting. I heard that it depends on the batting. Can anyone help me with this? Thank you!!

Do you mean quilting by hand? If so, there's no fast, hard rule. As long as the stitches are evenly spaced, that's fine. Be sure and use a very small quilting needle, like a size 10.

Im so glad that you asked this question. I am a "self taught/fairly newbie" at quilting and I was wondering the same but for a sewing machine?

Chrissy1, When piecing, I use the '2' placement on my machine.

You can use Tiger Tape to give you guide to keep your hand stitches even. I use it when any hand stitching will show. There is many sizes to pick from for almost every type hand stitching.

Thank you for all the input, but I was wondering for machine quilting.

Google machine quilting, as I do not have a clue, since I do it by hand, but will spread my wings one of these moons and try to machine quilt. HA

I use the no. 3 setting for machine quilting. I get better results with a little longer stitch.

Pretty much every machine quilting book I have consulted says to use 8-10 stitches to the inch for machine quilting.....BUT each machine is different, so experiment a bit to see what setting gives you the smoothest results.

For machine piecing, making the blocks, you want to use a small stitch, like 15-18 stitches per inch. Makes the quilt more durable.

Thank you that helps a lot. When I took my quilting class that was never explained to me. :)
