Log Cabin Quilt
Hi, I am new to this board but was hoping that some of you could help me out. I found a pattern for a log cabin quilt and so I decided to try it. It says there is 1/4 in seam already figured in.
It says to cut a block 3"x3" in red which i did. Then it says the first strip is 1 3/4" x 3" (light) next is 1 3/4" x 4 1/4" light.Next two stips are dark cut first dark at 1 3/4" x 4 1/4 and the next at 1 3/4 x 5 1/2. I got those all on following the turning directions but then it says, "Add another round of stips, increasing the length of every alternate strip by 1 1/2" to accomodate the growing size of the block. I measured the square and tried to do the figures on paper but I am missing something. I tried to cut the next light piece at 5 1/2" but that is too long and 5 1/4 is too short once it is put on and now I am totally stumped. I could be off an ant on stitching line seam but not a quarter inch. Can someone out there tell me what I am doing wrong?

Re: Log Cabin Quilt
What book are you working with? I would suggest Elenore's book Log Cabin Quilt In A Day. The instructions are absolutely on the money and no cutting little pieces either. Just go to shop at the top of the page or if you have a local quilt shop they should carry one.

Oh dear. Rhonda is right. You're using the wrong book. I think you can find better directions and photos online if it's not possible for you to get El's book. But if you can get the book, do it. It might be on sale this month.
Good luck and have fun.

Trust us...you are doing it the hard way. Get Eleanor Burn's Log Cabin Quilt In A Day book. This was the first real quilt I ever made. You can do it easily and without frustration! Honest! It's worth it!

Re: Log Cabin Quilt
Don't cut the length ahead of time, just cut strips to the width suggested and after sewing them on you just cut the lenght as needed. You would get more directions at:
http://www.equilters.com/library/logcab ... part1.html
or
http://www.sewquilty.com/History/0202.html
But I have used El's Log Cabin book and it does give more detailed instructions. If you can't buy a copy check out your local library.

Winterblue. I agree with everyone else's comments. El's Log Cabin book is the best. I don't see the book on the website anymore is it out of print? I think she has a log cabin quilt in the Still Stripping, 25 years anniversary book too. Her directions are the best. The instructional DVD is good also.
(Can ya tell I love El's books???????)

Re: Log Cabin Quilt
Winter, I was surfing around the QIAD website last night. If you click on --download free pattern-- on the home page, there is a pattern there that uses the technique that El uses on the log cabin blocks. Rather than cutting out small pieces, you sew strips together and trim them to fit. It really is a LOT easier!
If you can't get a hold of Eleanor's Log Cabin book, looking at this might help.

Re: Log Cabin Quilt
That's good news, thought it went out of print. That really is the best book for learning how to do a log cabin.
That's great it's on sale.
