non traditional fabric.

Post by khowardquilts »

My Mother-in-law was going through some fabric today. She has some voile scraps that her mother had. It is too thin for quilting. I was wondering if it would work for a stained glass wall hanging.

You could use it for that although hand dyed fabrics are preferred. You can use that fabric in a quilt however. You just foundation piece it(I use muslin). I make quilt from clothes of those that pass away at the request of their families. I have to use everything from satins, knits, gauze, super stretch ect. I have to work with what the family gives me, mostly dry clean only stuff. You just work it out by cutting a larger square than your fabric, cutting strips from Kona and doing a modified Log Cabon. OR you can use the fab in an Ohio Star, using her fab in the center and cotton for the points. Eitherway, any type of fabric can be used in a quilt, as long as you foundation piece. Then, you just piece the blocks as usual. I try to press the seams open if I can but don't sweat it if they won't all open. HTHs, Amie :o)

You can also fuse interfacing to thinner or stretchy fabrics to make them stable. That way they'll go in more easily with the cottons. Janie

I use just about anytype of fabric in my quilts, if it is very thin i will put an interfacing behind it or layer it - it may also make a wonderful embellishment -

I saw a quilt using voile over other fabrics to give them a hazy shimmery look. Like fairy wings or butterfly wing it was quite beautiful
