batting question, pls

Post by Kittyquilt9292 »

I know this has been discussed before, but I can't find the topic. So, please humor me and post answers again. pretty please.

Which is the better batting, Hobbs Heirloom (which is 80% cotton, 20% polyester blend) or Warm & Natural. The warm & natural says it doesn't need pre-washing. I prefer not to have the "shrunk look, so I always pre-wash. If you don't pre-wash this, does it give the shrunk look? Is Warm & Natural worth the extra cost?

Thanks so much everyone for taking time to respond again, or maybe for the first time. Hugs and Merry Christmas everyone. carol/kittyquilt

I've noticed that Warm and Natural has pieces of black hulls, or something from the cotton, left in. The black things showed through the light fabric I used on my last quilt. I never noticed this before when using darker fabric. Look the batting over carfuly for any big black speckles.

Warm & Natural definitely shrinks a little and will give it the "shrunk look". I think it says it will shrink up to 3%.

I've never tried preshrinking it before, but on some things like wall hangings or table runners, I would prefer not to have the shrunk look so I might try prewashing it in the future. I've never tried Hobbs. Does it shrink?

I noticed recently on some Warm & Natural that I bought awhile ago and just got around to using, is that it has little nobbies all over it on one side. I've never had that problem before. I don't think I can return it because I bought it probably at least 6 months ago and don't have a receipt for it anymore. I bought a whole bunch of it when it was on sale for half off and I sure hope it's not all like that. It's rolled up on a cardboard tube so I don't want to unroll it to find out. It was very disappointing-I could feel it through the quilt. I must have got a bad batch. :( So next time I think I will feel it as they are unrolling it to cut it.

Edit & correction: the batting with nobbies on it turned out not to be Warm & Natural. I returned it to JoAnn's and they told me they got some cheaper stuff in one time and it appeared that's what I got. They took it back no problem and I exchanged it for the real deal. I'm so happy!! :)

I love both batts, I don't think you can go wrong with either of them. since both batts are top of the line, I guess it just depends on your quilt top. I love the feel of W&N, so soft and snugly. Hobbs Heirloom is a little more formal, a lighter but crisp drape to it. I love them both so I can't say one is "better" than the other. However, neither batt is one that you would need to pre-wash. W&N makes a bunch of diff. batts, check out their website. Amie :o)

I really like wool batting, and dream cotton batting. I also really love the needle punch type of batting. It realyy also depands for what project, or for which person it is.

A quilt for someone who always feels cold, I would choose wool batting and flannel backing....etc.

I do not like the poyester type, they're so stiff, or the new kind with bamboo.

I haven't tried wool batt but I want to. I also haven't tried the bamboo but like Susanna says, not many fans out there it seems. I don't care for poly at all either, too stiff and scratchy. BTW, off topic but this AM, I pieced together a bunch of W&N batt strips from squaring up and plan to make a doll quilt with it! Thrify Goodness!! Amie :o)

My favorite is the needle punch, but I can only find it in crib size around here. Anyone know where I can order it online?

Warm and Natural is MUCH warmer than Hobb's 80/20 batting. Actually, I prefer Quilter's Dream Batting, either the 100% cotton or their blend. But between the two you mentioned, I'd go with the Hobb's. You're going to roast under the Warm and Natural.
