what is topstitching
I've been quilting about 1 1/2 years, and I'm making a tote bag for a gift. I have the front and back separate. Each is made of 3 pieces which I've sewn together. Now it says to topstitch. I don't really know what topstitching is - is it just sewing on the right side of the fabric? I don't know what I should be topstitching. What are the benefits of topstitching? Thanks for your help.

Re: what is topstitching
Topstitching is done on the right side of the fabric and is decorative as well as utilitarian. I sometime enlarge the stitch abit to enhance the look. Hope this helps.

Re: what is topstitching
Topstitching is done 1/4 inch from seam line. Stitching done closer, usually 1/8 inch is called edge stitching.
Topstitching is used to accent seams and style lines, to give garments a structured finished look, and to hold seams flat.
When I worked in a garment factory I was a collar finisher. I edgestitched a min of 1400 collar bands per week for 11 years!!!
