Feedsacks

The feedsack discussion reminded me of some fabric I saw the other day. It was not very good quality but it was Santa in reds, greens, and whites. Very reminiscent of the 1950s. I thought it would make a great Christmas apron.

What a beautiful collection. I always thought the feedsacks were pastel prints and pastel or white solids. But I do remember photos in B&W where the clothes were these patterns.

Susan they have a feedsack book that I purchased last year if thats any help to you It's titled A Few Of my Favorite Feedsack Quilts by Christine Meunier I hope this is a help.

I have feedsacks also and hate to cut them! But there is a pattern in Better Homes and Gardens April issue called "Two of a kind". This would really show off the beautiful colors. I plan on making this when I can find something that resembles the white and red that connects the squares.

Ah, the memories that the feed sacks bring back.All my dresses were feed sacks until I started high school! I too have some I cherish but have decided to use some of them for a quilt. The ones I am using are bright golden yellow with tiny white polka dots and white daisys.The pattern I am using is the resting butterfly found in the Better Homes and Gardens book "Grandma's Best Full Size Quilts". I am making all the butterflies the same and appliqueing them with brown thread on a blue background.Going to call it Butterfly Sky.I could use another sack or two if anyone has one to spare.Love to visit with you all.

hi, well i was born in 1945 and i had feedsack dresses and undies until i was 9 yrs old. my momma use to buy a bit of a solid fabric to make the collars or sleeves with the feedsacks as the main part of my dress. i went home crying when i was 9 because i was turning summersalts and the kids saw my homemade undies and made fun of me. my aunt told me not to cry that her momma once made her a pair of undies out of black sateen, she ssaid she thought they were the neatest thing untill the kids at school ask her if she was wearing black rubber panties. i always felt better after that, learned that kids haven't changed .

Until I read this I had forgotten I have flour sacks in a cedar chest. My mother-in-law gave them to me. I think incorporating them in a quilt will be a way of remembering her. Maybe they could have a little embroidered label saying flour sack, circ 19-something.
