what's this technique called?

Post by bjsm1981 » Sun Aug 17, 2008 9:00 pm

I saw a quilt that used 1 large single fabric for the top and coordinating for the back - it was quilted together in a pattern of 8 straight lines quarter inch apart then a scallop-like a figure 8 mirrored and this was repeated on the entire very large quilt. It was a stiff quilt, in fact they made pillow shams same way. I saw this in the quilt shop in Solvang,CA. Also, it wasn't a solid fabric it was a beautiful seagreen with seashells on fish detailed on it. But the quilt just looked fabulous - so simple but elegant. I also saw this done on a bib type apron - they must have quilted the material first then cut it for the pattern. I know it's not wholecloth quilting cause it's a very simple pattern. I've looked on the internet and can't seem to find anything on QNNTV or fons/porter. I went thru all the qiad episodes...So, maybe this is just so simple and i'm making it hard - could it just be one $2.00 stencil repeated and framed by straight lines? Oh My....i'm almost embarassed to send this question in now - maybe it'll get a good laugh. I've just never seen this before - i started sewing about 8 years ago and quilting 4yrs so this stuff is new. I have fabric i just can't seem to cut up and this type of sewing/quilting would fit this. Any ideas if this procedure has a "name"? Anyone else been to Solvang quilt shop recently?
Thanks!

I think the quilt you described fits the description of wholecloth quilting.

Yes,Yes, It is wholecloth quilting. I have done one. It had a preprinted top.

thanks! i thought it might be. I did get confused when i checked online and all the whole cloth designs were very intricate and preprinted - almost like a hawaiian type. So, thanks again, I think i'll give this a try!! I'll send update if i succeed.

If your sewing machine has a quilting guide, use it to keep your squares the same distance apart all over it. If not, you will have to mark the quilting lines. You want to quilt the fabric before you bind it.

Since it isn't pieced together, it IS wholecloth quilting, although typically that has fancy designs quilted on it rather than the simple quilted diamonds.
