Re: Question about rocking
Hi Winona.. I am new to this forum too, and have just loved it so far, I have enjoyed reading the really interesting and informative posts..and met some really nice people!
I would really encourage you to slap on that walking foot and do some stitch in the ditch! It works like a charm and if you are scared you might bung up your project, try it on some scraps with batting scraps in the middle.. It works so well you will wonder why you waited so long to try it! I have found a longer stitch and good sharp needle are essential.. and if you try the nylon thread you may have to fiddle with the tension some, but its well worth the effort.
As to hand quilting.. I get in the mood for it once in a while.. I took a class at my local shop a while back, and I have also found that Alex Anderson is a good source both in her books and on DIY TV.. you can get some of her older shows online now, just google her name or google simply quilts and you will be on your way.
Good luck and keep us posted on your progress!!

Re: Question about rocking
Hi Winona and welcome!
I took a class on Hand Quilting at the Long Beach Quilt Festival and the lady who taught the class was also a judge of quilts. She said she often both hand quilts and machine quilts in the same quilt. One was entered in the show! She uses the machine quilting for straight areas and the hand quilting for the intricate areas.
May I suggest practicing your machine quilting on something smaller such as totes, placemats or pot holders. I have been making totes and using the walking foot on the outside and practicing free motion quilting on the inside lining. (I am trying to learn free motion). The walking foot is really wonderful and I am sure you will like the results.

I have a lap swivel hoop frame and it works fine with the Aunt Becky.

Re: Question about rocking
Well girls, I finally just bit the bullet and ordered the hoop from Jean Brown. If I'm going to learn to do this I want to do it right. So now I'm getting antsy waiting for it so I can get started. I want to practice and perfect my technique before I start on my big quilt. As slow as I am I figure it will take me 2 years to get it hand quilted but what the heck...it's only time. Some people just seem to get so much more out of their 24 hours than I do. We lost 3 minutes of daylight today so it's heading into my time of year....yeah!! jan
