how to finish dresden plate

Post by dresden01 » Wed Jul 23, 2008 5:13 pm

I was given dresden plate pieces in 2 sizes and I have never quilted before. The woman who was working on this passed away. I would like to finish the quilt for her husband. I have no clue if I attach the plates to blocks or apply them to the backing. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

You applique them onto squares. I would decide what size I want the finished block to be and cut squares a little bigger than the finished size because the applique sometimes takes up a little fabric. If I wanted a 12" finished block I would take 12" plus seam allowance of 1/4" on all sides which would make it 12-1/2" X 12-1/2" and then add some for shrinkage - I would cut a 13-1/2" square to be on the safe side. After you applique them then you square up the squares to 12-1/2", sew them all together with a 1/4" seam, add a border, quilt and bind it. You can also add sashing strips between the squares. HTH
