I have never tried the machine tacking, but I have tied a number of quilts by hand. I used crochet cotton that matched or contrasted with the quilt. For the first one it is helpful to have it match the backing fabric then uneven stitches don't show as much. I haven't time now to find directions. I use a square knot and on a baby quilt I will tie it a third time.

Sunsup, I also have used the button method once when making a baby quilt. Just pretended I had a button on each of the corners and had the machine stitch "the invisible button" on.

I have tacked 2 quilts for myself and helped tack several at our quilt quild. I put my quilts in my floor frames just as if I was planning to hand quilt them. I like this finish, the quilt is held tight and there aren't any puckers in it. I get a much better finish using this method than layering them on a large table. I used crochet thread and tacked about 6 inches apart. I used a square knot and trimmed the thread about 1 inch long. It is a simple and fast finish. I understand that fancy embroderied quilt weren't quilted with batting, they just used the top and backing and tacked the two layers.

I finished tacking this quilt and all I have to do now is sew the binding down. I will post picture when it is done. Thanks for your help here.
