block distortion...need advise

Post by Trisha » Thu Jun 12, 2008 2:43 pm

I am new to quilting and am having a problem maybe someone can help me with. It seems that when I piece a block, the top left corner is almost always cocked to the right. Any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong would be greatly appreciated.

What pattern are you doing?? Check you pieces are the right size. If they are just off a little they throw you how quilt top off too. Katherine

You may want to check and see if when you start sewing a seam, it is 1/4" even with the rest of the seam. If it is larger or smaller it will throw off the rest of the pieces at the beginning and ends. Does that make any sense??????

Are you letting the machine feed the fabric without your help. Sometime I find I'm holding back the fabric a tad and that creates problems. One thing I do for a difficult block to come out right is to glue baste the seams before I sew with a teeny drop of Roxanne's basting glue. Works like magic. You could cut the out side pieces of the block 1/4 larger and then you'll have plenty of extra to square the block up. I've never sewn a lot of blocks that come out the same size. Too many factors with each block for them all to come out the same for me.
