How darling! Great job. Doesn't sound to difficult to make, do you think a beginner would be able to make one? I need a project for my rainbow girls and only two have ever sat down in front of a machine. I have four girls that had never seen a sewing machine except in pictures or on TV until they met me..........can you imagine that!!!
Happy stitching!!!

Astitchintime, do not worry about the girls not being able to use the sewing machine (they will learn it only by trying, anyway ...). The Japanese make ALL their bags by hand! They sandwich, quilt and bind the zipper edges first, put the zipper under the edge (showing the teeth)and sew it from the inside by hand. Then the side seams are sewn. It is a good idea to draw a pattern before sewing - decide about the size of your front pannels, the bottom, the sides - they must all match (you can cut your model out of paper and try to fold it to learn if your edges match). Drawing the pattern do not forget to add 1/4" allowances. If you try out a bag with a rectangle front pannel, you can then adjust it to a trapezoid or play with the angles of the flaps (as I have done with the above bag). A little trick: draw your "net", what the pattern will look like after you have chopped off the side corners - and mark everything on the fabric. It helps the edges meet when sewing. Good luck!

Redsaltbox, I have used iron-on (fusible) batting (a marvellous product!), not very thick one. In fact, you can add an extra layer to the bottom part.(Cut out this "extra" rectangle exactly the size the bottom - otherwise you will have too much bulk in the side seams).

That's really lovely. The decorative stitches really accent the project.
