tossed nine patch question

Post by jacquie2 »

Ok, I see all of these lovely "tossed nine patch" quilts everyone is posting in the quilt photo section...here's my question -- where is the ninth patch. I see four pieces or 8 pieces or maybe its 16 pieces to a block, I sure can't find the ninth piece. Is only 4, 8 or 16 pieces to the block? thanks happy trails, jacquie

I haven't made one yet Jacquie, but my understanding is you make a 9 patch and cut it in fours straight through the middle, that is why you are seeing 4 - 8 and 16 patches - does this make sense? :o)

Jacquie,

You make a nine patch with 3 across and 3 down. Make the 9 patch with a solid color in the middle. So middle patch in the middle row. It can be the same solid color in each block or different. It's up to you. Then you cut the 9 patch in half TWICE.

Once down the middle, then take those two pieces and cut them in half too. You now have four blocks and each block has a small piece of the solid.

Now take all the blocks and arrange how you like. Try drawing a 9 patch on paper and then draw two lines: one in the middle top to bottom (halfway through middle patches) and then one from side to side halfway through the middle row. If you draw it out it might make easier to visualize.

Hope that helps.

OK, now i get it!! Geez, no wonder I wasn't finding any "9 patches" lol Thanks so much for the info, guess I'll have to purchase El's book, it looks and sounds pretty easy, but the results sure are pretty! Thanks again, happy trails, jacquie

Great. I don't have the book. A LQS owner sketched it out for me and then I came home and did it. The thing I like best about it is that it looks really different depending on what fabrics you use and whether or not you use the same solid color in the middle of each 9 patch. My Roman Holiday one I used different ones. The next one I am going to stick with one color and see how it turns out.

Jacquie -

I was looking for somehting else today and came across this. I had to retrace my steps to find it for you. It looks pretty easy and I'm thinking of trying it myself!

Yes, this pattern has been a free idea on the web for a long time. I was surprised that the free pattern was made into a $9 pattern. The free idea is called D9P or Disappearing 9 Patch anywhere on the web. Amie

After I read this post earlier this morning, I went and made a 9 patch and cut it in 4ths just to try it and so I wouldn't forget how to do it. I just posted a picture in the photo section of a lap quilt I made from my black/white charms of the pattern. So much fun and 1 block just led to another and another etc.

Thanks for the instructions everyone, I want to make another one and use a theme for the blocks that stay at 5 inches.
