Help with scalloped edges please! (using a plate)

I know most people would buy a template, but time and money are preventing that now. I read somewhere else that you can use a dinner or luncheon plate to do them. Here's the plan, tell me what you think or what you've done with homemade remedies... The quilt will be appx 80x90 inches and I have a plate that's about 9.5" wide. On the 90" side I figured I'd start in the middle and start marking out to the edges and do the same on the other side. (Using pencil that will wash.) Then maybe do the corners and work in on the 80" side? I'm just not sure, it's very intimidating. I figured once I got them right I'd mark with a permanent pen before sending it to the quilter... What do you think? Thanks, Anna

Regardless of what I'm using to draw my scallops, I start on the corners and work toward the middle. That way I can elongate or shorten the middle scallops where it won't be so noticible.
