Two great finds -- Quilt 1

Post by jacquie2 » Wed May 07, 2008 4:50 am

Stopped by a moving sale Saturday morning. She had 3 old quilts hanging up, no price tags. She let me have the two I was interested in for $35 each. Wish now I had grabbed the one that was in really, really bad shape. She doesn't know how old these are, all she knew was that her husband's grandmother or great grandmother made them and they were made in Georgia. They are hand sewn and hand quilted. Was this a good find?
Here's the bowtie:

Happy Trails, jacquie

UPDATE: Thanks for the washing tip -- I might give the buttermilk soak a try for this quilt. This must have been a "summer" quilt - very light weight, even the batting is very fine. The other quilt, I doubt I'll ever wash...it would take 4 men holding each corner to get it out of the water. I was thinking of just hanging it in my sewing room.

I could kick myself for not getting the really torn up quilt she had there. I got to thinking about it, and I could have easily fixed this one. That one was another scrappy but same fabrics. I went back to her house Monday morning and she already given that quilt to her friend. Shame on me!

I plan on hanging this one above the bed in my guest room.

OMG what a great find! The price was great too. You are so lucky to have found these quilts. I think that even with a couple of problems they are good. Just think that someone hand sewed and hand quilted these. A thing of the past as you know. Most of us machine sew and machine quilt.

Absolutely a terrific find even with the holes in the tops!

I've heard soaking the stains in buttermilk is suppose to remove them. then soak in delicate quilt soap to remove the buttermilk, rinse lots and squeeze dry. Let us know if you try this and how your results are.

Hey those are nice quilts. I have one that I am repairing for a friend of my Mom's. This quilt is over 40 yrs old. The stories told by that old fashioned material is so neat to think of. What a lucky find. Wish I had your kind of luck with finding quilts like that.
