Cut your applique pattern out of freezer paper. Press it onto the backside of your fabric and cut out, adding about 1/4" more of fabric. I then turn the fabric over the raw edges of the freezer paper, hand baste it down and press it real well. Put it onto your background square, stitch it on, then, just before your last couple of stitches, remove those basting stitches, reach in, remove that freezer paper pattern, and finish stitching. Beautiful edges.
