Re: "Less than traditional" placemat
Hey- I made this same pattern into placemats at Christmas time using Christmas fabrics and then enclosing a candle with candle ring to go with the placemat. (So, I guess it was more of a mini- table runner!)
I also made a baby quilt using this pattern & brite fabrics. The thread that I used to do the blanket stitch was a varigated thread in brites. The new mommy loved the colorful quilt! (I used light flannel sandwiched in between the circles to make it a little warmer for these Iowa winters!) It is a fun project! And when you are making it...you are getting the quilting done at the same time! YAHOO!

Lovely! I hear the good thing about this technique is that you can go on as long as you please - and stop whenever you get tired of it ...

That is a cool placemat. Wish i had a class in that technique. I'll ask our guild programmer about that.

That is absolutely gorgeous Joan!!!!!!!!
You mentioned using embroidery patterns in the centers for a quilt ... where would the embroidery go?
And Lifeisgrand mentioned using verigated thread for the blanket stitch.
Where is the blanket stitch? Around the "blue petals"? And where the "petals" come together ... how is that done?

I am planning on making a table runner using embroidery patterns in the centers -- the embroidery would go where you see the floral fabric. I would probably use an off-white solid fabric with the embroidery on it --so it would be surrounded by the "petals". On this photo I did not use any blanket stitch -- just a regular straight stitch. It is a really fun technique to use -- it just uses 2 circles of fabric, and the petals are from the circles folded around. I used the "Less than Traditional" method, but if you are interested, I would suggest taking a class if you can. I bought the book and ruler at my fabric store, Or online at "Quilters Haven" and had a hard time figuring out how to do it, but once I saw someone do it -- it is SO easy, and the best part it is finished as you go, so you can make it as big as you want. I have enough fabric to make 3 more placemats, but I may just add to this and make a table runner out of it.
