ooooooooh ladies. Sarah it should be a finished 14" block which measures 14 1/2" x 14 1/2". I made 6 blocks on Sunday but didn't measure until last night. They are 15" x 15". It says in the instructions to use a scant 1/4". I am going to try again tonight with a full 1/4" and see what I get. My suggestion to everyone before doing the EL way of chain piecing to do one block first to see where you need your sewing line to be. I am 1/4" Challenged so I know where I usually have to sew to get the right size block but decided to follow the instructions first. Because I usually use a scant 1/4" anyway when I sew, I should not have used the scant 1/4" this time.

Well it looks like I am going to have 2 quilts. These blocks are sooooo pretty!!! Will try to post a picture of one in a few.

Yes im useing the scant 1/4. If you use 1/4 it will be small. I dont know why it's coming out 14 x 14 1/2 now. Before we send them do u want them to be 14 x 14 ?

Sarah - it should measure 14 1/2" x 14 1/2" for a finished 14" block. The other 1/2" is your seam allowance when you go to sew them together. Mine are coming out a whole 1/2" too big. Try making one without the scant 1/4" - it probably will come out perfect. That's what I am going to do this evening.

Girls - have any of you done a test block. If so, maybe you could give Sarah some pointers.

Sarah - also a teacher told me it could be in the pressing. Before you make another block. Give it a good pressing in the direction that is too small.

Sarah see message below. 14" finished means what it will be after you sew your blocks together. A block measures 1/2" bigger than the finished size to give you the 1/2" seam allowance to sew. Your block before mailing should be 14 1/2" x 14 1/2".

Amie, I know but I don't know what to tell Sarah. Its kindof hard when you're not with the person. Sarah please try making the block without the scant 1/4" to see if that will work. If still a problem try giving it a good pressing. I've had blocks that were off by 1/4" and repressed and they were okay. Amie do you know what it could be? Mine are 1/2" inch too large. I am going to try not using the scant 1/4" tonight.

It sounds like I'm going to have to make a sample block. You guys have me worried. I don't like to use a scant 1/4" seam because I have a 1/4" foot that has a single hole for the needle so I can't change my needle position. If I have to use a scant 1/4" then I can't use my favorite foot. So, I'll try it with my 1/4" foot and see what it comes out to. Thanks for the heads up Sarah & DJ.
